Google Photos to Introduce Gemini AI-Powered Memory Recaps

Google Photos might soon introduce a new feature that leverages Gemini, Google’s advanced artificial intelligence (AI) model, to create personalized memory recaps, according to a recent report. Discovered during an APK teardown of the app on Android, this feature could generate narrated memories, providing meaningful context instead of merely compiling images into slideshows based on metadata. This comes after several recent updates to Google Photos, which is the default media manager on most Android devices. The updates include enhanced tools like an updated trim feature, an auto-enhance option, and a new video speed adjustment tool.

Gemini AI-Driven Memories on Google Photos

An APK teardown of Google Photos version 7.1 for Android, as reported by Android Authority, revealed references to a feature that would allow Gemini AI to generate memories. While this feature is not yet widely available, even for beta testers, it appears under a “Memory types” setting labelled as “Gemini-powered memories.” This AI-driven tool may offer users personalized recap memories, adding narration to their visual recollections.

Speculation suggests that this Gemini-powered feature could be integrated into the “Year in Review,” giving users more flexibility when creating or editing their annual photo summaries. However, it’s unclear whether this tool will draw data from other Google services, and it is expected to be an opt-in feature, giving users control over its activation.

Other AI-Powered Features in Google Photos

Google Photos has recently seen the addition of several AI-enhanced tools. One of the most notable is the “Ask Photos” feature, which allows users to search for specific images by submitting a conversational query to Gemini. Currently in its experimental phase through Google Labs, this feature expands the search capabilities within the app.

In addition to “Ask Photos,” users can now leverage more intuitive search queries, providing descriptive text in the search bar for better image results. Other updates include new controls for adjusting video playback speed, enhanced options for improving brightness, contrast, and lighting in images, and precise video trimming down to a specific frame. With these AI-powered features, Google Photos continues to evolve as a more intelligent and user-friendly media management tool.
