All Eyes on the Lens – iPhone 17 Pro to Get a 48MP Telephoto Boost?

As the September 2025 launch of the iPhone 17 series inches closer, the rumor mill is once again in overdrive. Leaks, concepts, and speculative renders have painted a bold new look for Apple’s next Pro iPhones, talk of sleek dual-tone finishes, a revamped Dynamic Island, and a radically redesigned chassis. But if you’re bracing for a visual shake-up, you might want to temper your expectations.

According to Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max won’t stray far from the design language Apple introduced in previous years. In fact, Gurman suggests that these premium models will look “quite similar” to the iPhone 16 Pro lineup, dashing hopes for a radical overhaul. The much-rumored dual-tone back, with a dark camera block atop a lighter body, appears to be a work of fan fiction rather than fact. Gurman clarifies that the camera housing will match the rest of the device, signaling Apple’s preference for subtle refinements over loud redesigns.

    So, What’s Changing?

While the overall aesthetic might remain familiar, the rear panel will see some evolution, particularly in the camera module. Though not dramatically different, Gurman hints that the rear camera system will take on a “meaningfully different” look. Think of it as Apple quietly refining the Pro series rather than flipping the script.

That said, if you’re holding out for a dramatic visual shift, you’ll likely need to wait until 2027, marking the iPhone’s 20th anniversary. Gurman hints at a “bold new Pro” in the pipeline, possibly paired with Apple’s long-anticipated foldable iPhone. That future iPhone, perhaps the iPhone 19, could usher in the next significant design era.

But let’s get back to the near future. While the iPhone 17 Pro models may not get a dramatic facelift, under-the-hood upgrades promise a leap in functionality, especially in the camera department. A recent leak suggests Apple is planning to equip the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max with a 48MP telephoto lens, up from 12MP, featuring an 85mm focal length (35mm equivalent). This change is likely aimed at improving portrait photography and low-light performance, thanks to the larger sensor capturing more light.

However, there’s a trade-off. The new telephoto system will reportedly max out at 3.5x optical zoom, a step down from the 5x zoom offered on the current iPhone 16 Pro models. Apple is said to be countering this with a “lossless” digital zoom up to 7x using in-sensor crop technology, similar to what powers the main camera on the iPhone 16 Pro.

The camera improvements don’t stop there. All three rear lenses – Main, Ultra-Wide, and Telephoto are expected to feature 48MP sensors, a first for Apple. Meanwhile, the front-facing TrueDepth camera is also getting a serious resolution boost, jumping from 12MP to 24MP.

Apple’s new A19 Pro chip will likely be powering all this, built on TSMC’s latest 3nm process (N3P). Expect performance and efficiency gains across the board because even if the iPhone 17 Pro doesn’t look wildly different, what’s inside could still feel like a major leap forward.
