Apple Rolls Out iOS 18.5 with Smarter Features, and a Splash of Pride

Apple has officially released the iOS 18.5 update, bringing a wave of fine-tuned enhancements to eligible iPhones. While it doesn’t completely reinvent the iPhone experience, this update polishes the essentials and quietly introduces a few notable changes, from smarter parental controls to satellite connectivity and a fresh burst of colour in the form of a new Pride Harmony wallpaper.

Mail App Gets a Smarter Touch

The native Mail app sees some user-friendly tweaks in iOS 18.5. One of the standout updates is the ability to toggle Contact Photos directly within the app’s interface. No need to dive into Settings, just tap the three-dot icon in the top-right corner and make the switch. Apple also gives users more control by allowing them to disable the “Group by Sender” feature, streamlining inboxes for those who prefer a simpler layout. Additionally, the All Mail view is now more accessible, sitting conveniently alongside existing filters like Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions.

    A New Shade of Pride

As part of Apple’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity, iOS 18.5 introduces the vibrant new Pride Harmony wallpaper. It’s not just eye-catching, it’s kinetic. The colours subtly shift and reposition themselves as the phone is locked, unlocked, or moved, adding an element of dynamic expression to your home screen. This matches perfectly with the Pride Harmony watch face also introduced in the watchOS 10.5 update, extending the celebration of diversity across Apple’s ecosystem.

    More Control for Guardians

Apple has made monitoring screen time even more proactive for parents and guardians. If a child uses the Screen Time passcode, guardians will now receive an instant notification, a small but significant step in improving digital parenting and ensuring boundaries are respected.

Satellite Connectivity on iPhone 13 Series

In a move that makes older iPhones even more capable, Apple has extended support for carrier-provided satellite connectivity to the entire iPhone 13 lineup. That means users can now stay connected even when they’re off the grid, no cellular or Wi-Fi? No problem. Once the feature is active, a ‘SAT’ icon appears in the status bar, indicating a satellite connection. This improvement comes as several telecom providers collaborate with companies like Starlink to expand coverage in remote areas.

A Smoother Experience with Bug Fixes and Security Patches

iOS 18.5 doesn’t just deliver new features, it also tightens security and fixes several known bugs. A significant patch addresses a baseband vulnerability in the iPhone 16e’s C1 modem, which previously opened the door for network-level interception. Enhanced memory management, input validation, and float handling have also been introduced to fix vulnerabilities in Safari, which could previously lead to unexpected crashes or data leaks through malicious websites.

Other fixes touch on areas like Call History, FaceTime, CoreBluetooth, CoreAudio, iCloud Document Sharing, and more, part of Apple’s ongoing effort to make iOS more stable and secure. As WWDC 2025 approaches, iOS 18.5 might just be the final polish before Apple shifts its spotlight to the much-anticipated iOS 19. But for now, this update brings thoughtful refinements and subtle strength to your iPhone.
