    Fabless chipmaker MediaTek is set to start manufacturing the world’s smallest 2 nanometer(nm) chips from September this year, a senior company official announced on Tuesday.

    Currently, the smallest commercially manufactured chip is 3 nanometers.

    “We are now moving into 2 nanometers. We will be taking out our first 2 nanometers device in September this year. Of course, this is a high-volume chip,” said MediaTek Vice Chairman and CEO Rick Tsai at the global tech event Computex 2025.

    Tarun Pathak, Director of Research at Counterpoint Research, highlighted MediaTek’s upcoming 2nm chip expected to be “taped out” in September as a major milestone. He emphasized it showcases MediaTek’s deepening collaboration with industry leaders like TSMC.

    “This 2nm chip is likely a custom ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) or a smartphone processor, designed for substantial efficiency gains through structural innovations,” Pathak noted.

    Tsai further revealed that in addition to advanced computing devices, MediaTek is expanding into connectivity technologies.

    “As the world moves gradually into the 6G era, I promise you, 6G technology will come with AI assistance, and MediaTek will be in a perfect position to develop and bring this 6G capability to the world with our AI capability,” Tsai stated.

    Tsai also emphasized MediaTek’s move into high-end computing, especially with Google’s Chromebook ecosystem.

    “Kompanio Ultra is made using TSMC’s 3 nanometer process. It delivers 50 TOPS of AI computing capability and provides up to 20 hours of all-day battery life,” he said.
