Instagram has just made a small but important update users can now post photos in a 3:4 aspect ratio without having to crop or add borders.
What’s New?
Until now, Instagram only supported vertical images up to a 4:5 ratio. That meant if your photo was in a 3:4 format (the default for most phone cameras), you had to either crop part of the image or add white or black borders to make it fit. This often changed the look and feel of the original shot.
With the latest update, Instagram now supports 3:4 aspect ratio photos directly. That means your vertical shots can now appear just as you captured them, no more cutting off important details or messing with extra formatting.
Instagram Confirms the Update
Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed the change on Threads, saying:
“Instagram now supports 3:4 aspect ratio photos – the format that almost every phone camera defaults to. From now on, if you upload a 3:4 image, it’ll now appear just exactly as you shot it.”
Instagram also shared a visual comparison on its broadcast channel, showing the difference between 4:5 and 3:4 formats. The change may be subtle, but it’s great news for those who care about preserving their full photo.
Works for Carousels Too
The new 3:4 support applies to both single-photo posts and carousel posts. That means you can upload multiple images in their original size without worrying about cropping or black bars.
A Step Forward for Creators
This update might seem small, but it reflects Instagram’s ongoing shift toward a more flexible and creator-friendly platform. Over the years, the app has moved beyond its original square-only layout. From vertical Stories and Reels to rectangular photo previews on profiles, Instagram continues to adapt to how people actually shoot and share content today.

Why It Matters
- Better for mobile photography: Most phone cameras shoot in 3:4, so your photos now look just like they do in your gallery.
- No more cropping: Keep your full frame, without trimming important parts of your image.
- More creative freedom: Perfect for photographers, creators, and brands who want their visuals to look exactly as intended.
Final Thoughts
Instagram’s support for 3:4 images is a small but meaningful update that improves the photo-sharing experience. Whether you’re a casual user or a professional creator, it’s now easier to share photos without compromising your vision.
