WhatsApp is working on a major update that could change how users identify unknown contacts. The platform is reportedly testing a feature that displays a Meta verified username such as the one linked to Instagram or Facebook when someone searches for an unfamiliar phone number. The test spotted by WABetaInfo is currently rolling out to select iOS users as part of WhatsApp’s broader push toward safer and more transparent account identification.
How the Feature Works
If the phone number you search matches an active WhatsApp account, the app will show the associated username along with limited profile information based on the person’s privacy settings. While unknown numbers will still appear in chat info, usernames searched directly will be able to hide the phone number which offers an added layer of privacy.
This approach could help users better understand who is contacting them, reduce confusion and improve trust. WhatsApp plans to support both personal and business accounts with the full rollout expected in 2026 as business profiles receive compatibility updates.

Username Reservation System in the Works
Alongside this feature, WhatsApp is also developing a reservation system that lets users and brands secure their preferred usernames before the global launch. The process will work through Meta’s Accounts Centre where people can submit the handle they already use on Instagram or Facebook and verify ownership. Once confirmed, WhatsApp will lock that username to the account and prevent others from claiming it during the early access phase.
This system aims to ensure a smoother rollout, help brands protect their digital identity across Meta platforms and create a unified naming experience for users.
