In the early 2010s, OLED was considered a risky venture, with many competitors abandoning their efforts, deeming it commercially unviable. LG, however, saw potential where others saw obstacles.

    Through substantial investments in research and development, LG defied industry doubt. In 2013, the company launched the world’s first commercially successful OLED TV, cementing its position as a pioneer. This milestone marked the beginning of LG’s dominance in the OLED market, a leadership it has maintained for over a decade.

    LG’s commitment to OLED aligns with its philosophy of enhancing human experiences. Beyond delivering superior visuals, LG focused on creating immersive moments that connect viewers with stories and emotions. This customer-centric approach earned LG the trust of audiences, filmmakers, and industry professionals worldwide, solidifying its reputation as a leader in display technology.

    LG’s OLED journey is a story of technological innovation and industry leadership. While competitors hesitated, LG pushed forward, setting standards that others struggled to meet. By 2025, LG had maintained a significant share of the global OLED TV market for 12 consecutive years.

    LG’s ability to anticipate and shape consumer trends distinguishes it. As demand for larger screens surged, LG led the Indian market with its ultra-large OLED TVs, including the LG OLED 246 cm(97”), one of the largest OLED sizes available in India, capturing a substantial market share. This focus on scale and innovation reflects LG’s forward-thinking approach.

    Beyond hardware, LG’s webOS platform, powered by AI, has redefined smart TV usability with personalized content recommendations and seamless integration. Filmmakers and cinematographers have lauded LG OLED for preserving creative intent, praising its rich blacks and vibrant color spectrum as ideal for storytelling. These endorsements highlight LG’s role in bridging technology and artistry, making OLED the preferred choice for creative professionals in Hollywood and Bollywood.

    LG’s OLED journey is a series of bold milestones that have reshaped the display industry. Below is a year-by-year timeline of LG’s OLED achievements, illustrating how the company turned challenges into opportunities and visions into reality.

    2013: The Dawn of OLED

    LG launched the world’s first commercial 139 cm (55”) OLED TV, a groundbreaking achievement that silenced doubters. With self-lit pixels delivering perfect blacks and infinite contrast, this TV set a new benchmark for picture quality, showcasing LG’s pioneering spirit in display innovation.

    2014: Scaling Up

    LG refined its OLED panels, enhancing brightness and colour accuracy. The introduction of 4K OLED TVs elevated resolution standards, offering viewers exceptional clarity. As OLED shipments rose, LG captured a significant share of the premium TV market.

    2015: Refining the Craft

    LG revolutionized the TV market with paper-slim OLED TVs, setting a new standard for design. These ultra-thin displays, leveraging OLED’s flexible and lightweight properties, delivered stunning visuals while redefining aesthetics with their sleek, minimalist form.

    2016: HDR and Beyond

    LG adopted High Dynamic Range (HDR) with Dolby Vision support, enhancing contrast and colour range. The LG OLED TV line-up got further enhanced due to it & became a consumer favourite, blending affordability with premium HDR performance. LG’s focus on HDR solidified OLED’s appeal for cinephiles and gamers.

    2017: Redefining Design with Artistic Innovation

    LG unveiled the LG SIGNATURE OLED W7, the world’s first Wallpaper OLED TV, at CES 2017. Its 2.57 mm razor-thin design adhered to walls like a piece of art, transforming living spaces into galleries. Paired with a Dolby Atmos soundbar and magnetic mounting system, the W7 earned global acclaim as a design masterpiece, stunning consumers in India and beyond.

    2018: AI Integration

    LG introduced the Alpha 9 processor, enabling AI-driven picture and sound optimization. The webOS platform evolved with voice recognition and personalized recommendations, making TVs more intuitive. LG’s OLED shipments surpassed 2.9 million units, reflecting growing consumer trust.

    2019: 8K OLED and Deep AI

    LG debuted 8K OLED technology, delivering breathtaking clarity with 33 million pixels. Deep AI Learning enhanced visual quality through real-time optimization, adapting contrast, colour, and sharpness to content and ambient conditions for a lifelike experience.

    2020: Rollable Innovation

    The LG SIGNATURE OLED RX, unveiled at CES 2020, introduced a 164 cm(65”) rollable OLED display that retracts into a sleek base. This innovative design offered unmatched flexibility, blending seamlessly into any space while delivering perfect blacks, vibrant colours, and infinite contrast.

    2021: Brightness Breakthrough

    LG’s OLED evo, introduced with the G1 series, boosted brightness by up to 20% using Micro Lens Array (MLA) technology. With microscopic lenses focusing light, the G1 series delivered vibrant visuals and excelled in gaming with a 120Hz refresh rate and low input lag, addressing OLED’s early brightness limitations.

    2022: Ultra-Large Dominance

    LG solidified its dominance in the ultra-large OLED TV market, holding a major share and offering models from the world’s smallest OLED TV to the largest  245 cm(97”) version. An AI Object Enhancing tool improved picture quality, while improvements in wireless transmission hinted at future innovations.

    2023: Lifestyle-ish Innovation

    LG celebrated a year of lifestyle screen innovation in India with the unveiling of the LG OLED Pose, which comes with an adjustable stand and fabric finish options that blend beautifully with home decor. Another highlight is the LG StanbyME, a portable battery-powered TV on wheels, providing flexible viewing options for mobile lifestyles, whether in kitchens or outdoor settings.

    2024: Transparent and Advanced Alpha 11 Chipset

    In 2024, LG introduced the advanced Alpha 11 chipset designed specifically for OLED TVs. This chipset features an impressive 144Hz VRR refresh rate, ensuring ultra-smooth visuals. It is also Nvidia G-SYNC certified, providing a seamless gaming experience. Additionally, its Brightness Booster Max technology enhances luminosity. With superior 4K performance that includes advanced AI upscaling and real-time image refinement, the Alpha 11 chipset sets a new standard for LG’s OLED display technology.

    2025: Pioneering AI and Next-Gen OLED AI TV

    LG’s OLED evo AI G5 TVs are redefining entertainment in India. Powered by the Alpha 11 AI Processor Gen2, this powerhouse personalizes visuals via AI Picture Pro for pixel-level clarity and 4K upscaling. The advanced AI features extend beyond just picture and sound quality. With machine learning algorithms, the TV analyzes viewing habits and preferences to suggest content tailored to individual tastes. This means that over time, the TV learns what you like to watch, from genres to favourite actors, making it easier to discover new films and shows that align with your interests. 

    Additionally, TV identifies user voice input via AI Voice ID for switching on individual user profiles, which further tailors recommendations, ensuring a seamless and immersive cinematic experience.
