Microsoft 365 Introduces Copilot Cowork: AI That Can Plan and Execute Work Tasks

Microsoft has introduced a new feature called Copilot Cowork within Microsoft 365, designed to help users automate everyday work tasks using artificial intelligence. The announcement was shared by Satya Nadella on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting how the new system can move beyond simple AI responses and actively complete tasks on behalf of users.

According to Microsoft, Copilot Cowork allows users to simply describe what they want done, and the AI will turn that request into a structured plan and execute it across multiple Microsoft 365 apps. These include tools like Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Excel.

The feature represents Microsoft’s push toward AI systems that not only answer questions but also perform real work tasks within enterprise environments.

What Is Copilot Cowork in Microsoft 365?

Copilot Cowork is an AI-powered assistant designed to help users delegate tasks directly to AI. Instead of generating suggestions or draft responses, the system can convert a request into a detailed workflow and execute the task automatically in the background.

For example, if a user asks Copilot to prepare a report or manage a schedule, the system will analyse available data within Microsoft 365 and create a step-by-step plan to complete the task.

The feature relies on signals gathered from emails, meeting notes, files, messages and other work data across the Microsoft ecosystem. This information is processed by a system called Work IQ, which helps the AI understand the context of a user’s work environment.

By analysing these signals, Copilot Cowork can determine priorities, organise tasks and complete them while keeping the user informed throughout the process.

    How Copilot Cowork Works

Once a user assigns a task, Copilot Cowork breaks it down into smaller steps and begins executing them across Microsoft 365 applications.

The system works in the background while offering checkpoints during execution. At these checkpoints, users can review actions taken by the AI, approve suggested changes or pause the process if needed.

If the AI requires additional details, it can ask users for clarification before continuing with the task. This design ensures that users remain in control while still benefiting from automation.

Microsoft says this approach helps balance productivity and oversight, allowing organisations to adopt AI automation without losing visibility over work processes.

Examples of How Copilot Cowork Can Help in Daily Work

Microsoft highlighted several real-world scenarios where Copilot Cowork can improve productivity.

    Calendar and Meeting Management

The AI can review a user’s Outlook calendar and identify scheduling conflicts. It can then suggest better meeting times, automatically reschedule appointments or decline unnecessary meetings. Once approved by the user, the system can also add dedicated focus time to reduce interruptions.

    Research and Business Insights

Copilot Cowork can also help with business research. For example, users can ask the AI to compile insights about a company or industry.

The system will collect information such as earnings reports, analyst commentary and relevant news sources, then organise everything into a structured research document. This reduces the time spent manually gathering information from multiple sources.

    Security and Enterprise Controls

Microsoft says Copilot Cowork operates within the existing security and compliance framework of Microsoft 365. This means all permissions, identity verification systems and organisational policies remain active when the AI performs tasks.

Every action carried out by Copilot Cowork is logged, allowing organisations to audit AI activity if needed. The feature also runs in a protected cloud environment designed to keep company data secure.

These safeguards are especially important for enterprises that handle sensitive data and require strict compliance with security standards.

    Multi-Model AI Approach With Anthropic

Microsoft also revealed that Copilot Cowork benefits from a multi-model AI strategy. As part of this approach, the company has integrated technology from Anthropic, specifically its Claude-based systems.

This integration allows Microsoft 365 Copilot to leverage capabilities inspired by Claude, improving how the AI plans and executes tasks within workplace applications.

The collaboration is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to build AI systems that can operate as intelligent digital coworkers rather than just chat-based assistants.

    What Is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is an agent-based AI workspace developed by Anthropic. Unlike traditional AI assistants that primarily answer questions, Claude Cowork is designed to complete real tasks.

Users can grant the AI access to a specific folder on their computer, allowing it to read, edit, create, rename and organise files within that directory. This approach enables the AI to actively assist with workflows rather than simply generating information.

By integrating similar concepts into Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft aims to create AI tools that can handle complex workflows across enterprise applications.

    The Future of AI-Driven Work

With Copilot Cowork, Microsoft is taking another step toward fully automated workplace productivity tools. Instead of requiring employees to manually perform repetitive tasks, AI systems can now plan, execute and monitor workflows across multiple applications.

As AI continues to evolve, features like Copilot Cowork could reshape how organisations manage daily operations, turning AI assistants into active collaborators that help teams work faster and more efficiently.
