GTA 6’s Extended Look Is Here: The Leaks, the Livestream, and What Comes Next

Grand Theft Auto VI just got its biggest reveal yet. Rockstar Games and Netflix released “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” on August 27, a roughly 26-minute dive into the game’s story, characters, and mechanics. It’s the longest look fans have had at the game since the first teaser dropped in December 2023. And it came after weeks of leaks that Rockstar spent trying to contain.

Here’s everything that happened, from the leaks to the livestream to what fans are saying now.

    The leaks that came first

Throughout August, gameplay clips and map images began surfacing online under the name “CyberLeek.” The first clips appeared around August 18, and Rockstar responded with DMCA takedown notices to accounts sharing them. That didn’t stop the leaker. A ninth clip surfaced on August 23, supposedly confirming Lucia was playable in the leaked build. Two days later, a twelfth clip went up, showing Jason inside a strip club.

CyberLeek claimed the leaks as a protest against Rockstar’s plan for a code-in-box physical edition instead of a disc. Take-Two, Rockstar’s parent company, reportedly gave Discord a September 4 deadline to help identify the leaker.

Rockstar broke its silence a day before the Netflix event. The studio called the situation heartbreaking for the team and said this wasn’t how it wanted fans to finally see the game.

    How the livestream worked

Netflix held exclusive rights to the extended look for six hours. The video went live on Netflix at 3 PM ET on August 27 (12:30 AM IST on August 28), available to subscribers worldwide with subtitles in 13 languages. It then moved to Rockstar’s YouTube channel for anyone to watch.

Rockstar set rules for streamers: they could go live with the extended look starting at 3 PM ET, but only with commentary or reaction content, straight reposts of the unedited video weren’t allowed. Alongside the Netflix release, select outlets and creators got a separate, longer preview at Rockstar North a month earlier.

What the extended look told us

The extended look opens mid-mission: Jason and Lucia shoot their way out of an apartment complex. Later, they’re hired as security for a character named Andreas, and the job spirals into a chase through Vice City’s nightlife scene. Throughout, the footage cuts between cinematic cutscenes and gameplay, including car theft mechanics like smashing windows and bypassing electronic locks, a redesigned weapon wheel that lets players swap guns without pausing the action, and instant character switching mid-scene.

One of the major audience concerns was the open-world mechanics, and Rockstar gave an apt teaser for what’s about to come with mini-golf, kayaking, scuba diving, a zoo, and an in-game social media app players can scroll through. Observant viewers also spotted six-star Wanted levels returning for the first time since GTA IV, alongside a new Criminal Profile system that tracks player behaviour, so firing back in self-defence won’t be judged the same way as a killing spree.

Across all the coverage of the Netflix drop plus outlet previews from Rockstar North, more than 150 new details emerged. The story runs an estimated 80 hours. Jason and Lucia can pursue an optional romance. Rockstar reportedly considered a four-protagonist structure before settling on the current pair, and the writers have avoided leaning on memes or current events that might date the game by launch.

    What people are saying

The reaction, at least on the first day, seems overwhelmingly positive. A lot of it centred on one detail: the footage came from a base PS5, not a high-end PC or a PS5 Pro. Fans on social media were doubtful, with several posts questioning how console hardware could produce visuals that clean. Streamer Hasan Piker, watching the heist sequences, compared the single-player game’s tone to the roleplay culture that grew around GTA Online’s NoPixel servers, a comparison that says a lot about how far the series has absorbed its own online community back into itself.

The soundtrack also got attention, with listeners finding songs from Sexyy Red, Depeche Mode, Phil Collins, The Weeknd, and Tove Lo across the footage. And CyberLeek, the source behind the pre-release leaks, became a punchline once the real trailer landed. The gap between the leaked build and the finished product was wide enough that even sceptics came around.

    What’s next

GTA 6 is still set for release on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with no confirmed PC release yet. Pricing hasn’t been officially announced, though early reports and a since-removed digital storefront listing point to a price near $80, possibly higher. Pre-orders aren’t live yet either.
