Over the past decade, the Indian kitchen has moved well beyond the traditional stove, refrigerator and mixer grinder. Chimneys, induction cooktops, microwaves, air fryers, dishwashers and water purifiers are increasingly becoming part of everyday life. But with greater convenience comes a cost that is often overlooked: the cost of running these appliances every day.
A 2026 report by CLASP, based on a nationwide household survey, found that kitchen appliances account for 28% of electricity use among surveyed Indian households. The study covered 4,321 households across 20 states, including urban and rural households and different climatic zones.
This should make us look at the kitchen differently. It is no longer simply a space where food is prepared. It is becoming an important energy-consuming centre of the Indian home, making appliance efficiency increasingly a household economics issue.
The Hidden Cost of a Smarter Kitchen
India’s residential electricity demand is already significant. According to the latest 2026 CLASP findings, the residential sector accounted for approximately 25% of India’s total electricity consumption in 2024-25, with residential electricity demand growing at around 6% annually.
At the same time, appliance ownership is increasing as incomes rise and lifestyles change. The question is no longer whether Indian households will adopt more technology, but whether that technology can deliver greater convenience without simply increasing energy consumption.
More Appliances Should Not Mean More Energy Waste
For much of the appliance industry, the word “smart” has become synonymous with connectivity: Wi-Fi, apps, notifications and voice assistants.
These features certainly add convenience. But if an appliance can be controlled from a smartphone while consuming more energy than necessary, how smart is it really?
A genuinely smart appliance should optimise the resources required to do its job. That means better heat transfer, precise power management, reduced wastage, lower standby consumption and technology designed around how Indians actually cook.
The future of smart appliances should be defined by efficiency, not just connectivity.
Efficiency Is Becoming the New Measure of Smart Technology
This shift towards efficiency is not unique to the kitchen. Across industries, businesses and consumers are increasingly looking at technology through the lens of how effectively it uses resources. In transportation, better fuel efficiency allows vehicles to travel further with the same amount of fuel. In manufacturing, automation and process optimisation help companies produce more while reducing material, energy and time wastage. In data centres, energy-efficient infrastructure is becoming critical as computing demand grows. Even buildings are increasingly being designed around efficient use of electricity, water and cooling.
The underlying principle is simple: efficiency allows us to achieve more with less. It reduces operating costs, improves productivity and makes technology more sustainable without necessarily asking consumers to compromise on performance.
The same principle now needs to become central to the Indian kitchen. As households add more appliances, efficiency can determine whether technological progress translates into greater value or simply higher recurring expenses.
For consumers, an efficiency-led appliance can offer benefits that go well beyond a lower electricity bill. Better energy utilisation can mean faster cooking, more consistent performance, reduced resource wastage and potentially longer-term savings. For manufacturers, designing for efficiency can also create products that are better aligned with changing consumer expectations and rising household energy costs.
This makes efficiency not merely a technical specification but a value proposition. The appliance that uses resources more intelligently can ultimately deliver greater value over the entire period of ownership.
The Real Price of an Appliance Goes Beyond MRP
Consumers still tend to judge an appliance primarily by its purchase price. But MRP is only the beginning of an appliance’s cost.
A product that costs ₹5,000 less upfront but consumes significantly more electricity can ultimately cost more than a more efficient alternative. This is why consumers need to think about the total cost of ownership: not simply what an appliance costs to buy, but what it costs to own and operate over its lifetime.
This is precisely why efficiency-led thinking is gaining relevance. When a product is used every day for several years, its operating efficiency can have a greater cumulative impact than a one-time difference in purchase price. The initial investment and recurring operating expense need to be viewed together.
Everyday Inefficiency Is a Household Cost
Energy waste is often hidden in small inefficiencies: a burner generating more heat than the vessel requires, uneven heat distribution, an appliance running longer than necessary, poor ventilation or unnecessary standby consumption.
Individually, these may appear insignificant. But when an appliance is used every day, small inefficiencies can become recurring household expenses.
Efficiency, therefore, is not only an environmental benefit. It is also an economic one. If an appliance can accomplish the same task using less energy, households can reduce their running costs without giving up convenience or performance.
There is also a larger behavioural benefit. When efficiency becomes visible to consumers, households can begin thinking differently about consumption itself. Instead of asking only, “How much does this appliance cost?”, the question becomes, “How efficiently does this appliance deliver the outcome I need?”
That is an important shift because it moves the conversation from price to value. A more efficient appliance can potentially reduce recurring expenditure, minimise resource wastage and provide better value over its operating life.
Consumers Need Proof, Not Just Energy-Efficiency Claims
Consumers need to see how energy efficiency translates into real savings. Across sectors, efficiency is increasingly helping businesses and households achieve more with fewer resources—reducing operating costs, minimising wastage and improving long-term value. The same approach needs to extend to kitchen appliances, where manufacturers must make efficiency measurable, affordable and part of core product design rather than a premium add-on.
The Future of the Indian Kitchen Is Efficient
The Indian kitchen will become more connected, more automated and more technology-driven. But it should also become more efficient.
We do not need consumers to want less convenience. We need technology to make that convenience more efficient.
A truly smart kitchen is one that gets the same work done with less energy, less waste and lower running costs.
The smartest appliance in an Indian home should not necessarily be the one that does the most. It should be the one that does exactly what it needs to do, without making the electricity meter work overtime.
