Brother DCP-T730DW Review: A Compact Wireless Ink Tank Multifunction Printer Worth Considering?

Printing remains one of the essential needs in our day-to-day life. Whether it is school assignments, invoices, photo prints, reports, or everyday documents, a reliable printer is still hard to replace fully with digital alternatives. For small and medium offices, homes, or hybrid setups that need consistent output without high ongoing expenses, an ink tank multifunction model that balances upfront cost, features, and low running costs can be particularly appealing. The Brother DCP-T730DW sits squarely in that space: a wireless ink tank 3-in-1 (print, scan, copy) with automatic duplex printing, mobile connectivity, and high-yield bottles designed to keep cost per page low. But is it genuinely better than the alternatives in its class? Let’s find out.

    Build & Design

The Brother DCP-T730DW is a compact all-in-one that packs printing, scanning, and copying into a relatively small footprint. Official dimensions are approximately 390 mm wide × 343 mm deep × 182.5 mm high, with a weight of about 8.6 kg. This makes it noticeably more space-efficient than many bulkier multifunction units, suiting desks in small offices, home workspaces, or shared environments where every centimetre counts. The design is straightforward and functional rather than flashy, typically a clean black or dark finish that looks professional without drawing unnecessary attention.

It includes a flatbed scanner glass for single documents or books, plus a 20-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) for multi-page jobs, a practical addition at this level. Paper handling centres on a 150-sheet input tray (suitable for plain, inkjet, glossy, and recycled paper in a range of sizes) and a roughly 50-sheet output capacity. It also has a manual feed slot for thicker media or special sizes. The overall construction feels solid for regular home or light office use, with the ink tanks designed for relatively clean, spill-resistant refilling and visible ink levels for easy monitoring.

One clear limitation is the control interface. The printer relies on a tiny 1-line LCD display. In well-lit conditions, it works for basic status and menu navigation, but it becomes genuinely difficult to read in low-light environments. The character set is limited, and the screen lacks the brightness or size needed for comfortable, frequent interaction. Fortunately, most day-to-day control can be handled through the Brother Mobile Connect app or a connected computer, so the physical panel is not a constant requirement. The physical buttons themselves have an older, remote-control style feel. They work reliably but offer little tactile feedback; a more modern click or resistance would improve the experience.

    Features

The standout feature for the price range is automatic duplex (two-sided) printing. Many competing ink tank models in similar budgets still require manual flipping for double-sided jobs. The DCP-T730DW handles this automatically on supported sizes (typically A4, Letter, and some smaller formats on plain or recycled paper), saving paper, reducing handling, and improving productivity for reports, contracts, or multi-page documents.

Print quality is a strong point. Maximum resolution reaches 1200 × 6000 dpi, which delivers sharp text and detailed colour output. Text documents come out clean and professional even at smaller point sizes. Colour graphics and photos hold up well for an ink tank machine aimed at office and home use rather than dedicated photo printing. The printer supports a wide range of media sizes, from 4×6-inch photo paper through Photo-L, Photo-2L, index cards, A6, A5, Executive, Letter, and full A4 (plus envelopes). I tested standard A4 photo paper and consistently achieved high resolution with impressive results. The text stays sharp, and the colours stay vibrant without excessive bleeding on the right paper. Additionally, there are borderless options available for many photo sizes.

Connectivity is modern and flexible. Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) provides better stability and less interference than single-band options, alongside USB 2.0, Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint, Mopria, and Brother’s Mobile Connect app. Setup is straightforward: the app walks users through Wi-Fi connection, ink filling, and initial cleaning in roughly 15 minutes in most cases. Once configured, mobile printing and scanning work quickly and simply. The app itself is functional for sending jobs, checking status, and basic management. However, the interface could use clearer navigation and more visual polish; it feels a bit dated compared with some newer manufacturer apps.

Scanning and copying complete the 3-in-1 package. The flatbed handles books or delicate originals; the 20-sheet ADF speeds multi-page jobs (one-sided scanning). Optical resolutions are solid for office documents, with useful copy functions such as ID copy, N-in-1, enlargement/reduction, and multi-copy. Quiet mode is available for lower-noise environments.

Running costs are a major advantage of the ink tank design. The printer ships with high-yield bottles, typically two black bottles rated around 7,500 pages each (total ~15,000 black) plus colour bottles rated around 5,000 pages each. Replacement bottles remain relatively affordable, driving cost per page well below typical cartridge systems. Automatic nozzle cleaning on a scheduled basis helps prevent clogging during periods of lighter use. Spill-resistant bottle designs and keyed colour ports reduce mess and user error during refills.

    Verdict

The Brother DCP-T730DW is a compact, wireless ink tank multifunction printer designed for homes, students, and small-to-medium offices, offering low running costs and solid performance. It features automatic duplex printing, high page yields, versatile paper support, and impressive print quality for documents and casual photos, making it a great value. However, the tiny display can be hard to read in low light, and the mobile app needs a more refined interface. Despite these minor drawbacks, if you prioritize space efficiency, wireless convenience, and low ongoing ink costs, the DCP-T730DW is a clear choice that delivers on everyday printing needs.
