Less Noise, More Light: The Case for a Mindful Diwali

Diwali has always been about light, warmth, new beginnings and the joy of coming together. It is that time of the year when homes glow with diyas, balconies come alive with fairy lights, the smell of festive food fills the air and everyone finds a reason to celebrate. But somewhere between the celebrations, elaborate decorations and the excitement of the festive season, perhaps it is time to rethink what being mindful during Diwali really means.

A festival that celebrates light should not leave behind a cloud of smoke. With air quality becoming an increasingly serious concern across Indian cities, particularly Delhi and Mumbai, the environmental impact of Diwali celebrations deserves more attention. Firecrackers release particulate matter and other pollutants into the atmosphere, adding to an already concerning pollution burden. They have real consequences for people, particularly children, senior citizens and those living with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.

And it isn’t just humans who are affected. For our four-legged companions, Diwali can be an incredibly stressful time. Dogs, cats and other animals have far more sensitive hearing than we do, making sudden, explosive sounds frightening and disorienting. The constant noise can trigger panic, anxiety and distress, while birds and stray animals are equally vulnerable. For elderly people, infants and those with sensory sensitivities, the relentless sound of crackers can also make what should be a joyful evening overwhelming.

Being mindful doesn’t mean taking the celebration out of Diwali. It means finding better ways to celebrate it. Think reusable festive décor, earthen diyas, natural flowers, locally made decorations and thoughtful gifting instead of excessive plastic packaging. Host intimate get-togethers, create beautiful rangolis, light up your balconies and choose experiences that bring people together without adding to the noise. If you have pets at home, create a quiet, comfortable space where they can feel safe during the celebrations.

Perhaps the most meaningful Diwali gift we can give this year is a little consideration for those around us. The elderly neighbour trying to sleep, the child sensitive to loud sounds, the pet hiding under the bed, the person struggling to breathe and even the environment that quietly absorbs the aftermath of our celebrations.

Traditions can evolve without losing their meaning. We can still dress up, exchange gifts, light diyas, indulge in festive feasts and make beautiful memories. Because at the end of the day, Diwali is about bringing light into our lives, not making it harder for someone else to breathe.
