YouTube Music Rolls Out Spotify-Like AI Playlist Feature – Here’s How It Works

YouTube Music has introduced a new AI Playlist feature for Premium subscribers, making it easier than ever to create personalised playlists using simple text or voice prompts. The company announced the rollout on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that the feature is now available on both Android and iOS devices.

With this update, users no longer need to manually search and add songs one by one. Instead, they can simply describe a mood, activity, idea, or music genre, and YouTube Music’s AI will instantly generate a customized playlist.

This move puts YouTube Music in direct competition with Spotify’s recently launched AI-powered playlist tool.

What Is YouTube Music’s AI Playlist Feature?

The AI Playlist feature allows Premium users to create playlists by typing or speaking what they want to listen to. For example, users can enter prompts like:

    • “Chill songs for late night drives”
    • “Workout music with high energy beats”
    • “Romantic 2000s Bollywood hits”
    • “Relaxing indie music for studying”

Once the prompt is entered, the app automatically generates a curated playlist based on the description.

According to YouTube Music’s post on X, the feature is marked with a Gemini-style logo, hinting at Google’s AI technology powering the tool.

    How It Works

YouTube Music uses AI to understand your prompt and generate a playlist tailored to your mood or genre preference. Instead of creating a radio-style stream, the tool builds a full playlist instantly.

However, Google has not yet shared details about how much editing control users will have after the playlist is generated. It is also unclear whether the feature adapts based on listening history like Spotify does.

How Is It Different from “Ask Music”?

In 2024, YouTube Music introduced a natural-language feature called “Ask Music,” which allowed users to request songs using simple prompts.

    The key difference:

    • Ask Music: Creates a radio-style listening experience based on prompts.
    • AI Playlist: Builds a complete playlist instantly based on your description.

This makes AI Playlist more useful for users who want a ready-to-save and share playlist instead of an ongoing music stream.

How It Compares to Spotify’s AI Playlist

Spotify recently launched a feature called Prompted Playlist, which also allows users to generate playlists using text prompts. Spotify’s version creates song selections based on user listening history and music trends.

With YouTube Music’s AI Playlist, Google is clearly stepping up its AI game in the music streaming space, offering Premium users a similar smart playlist creation experience.

The competition between YouTube Music and Spotify is now expanding into AI-driven music discovery.

How to Use YouTube Music’s AI Playlist Feature

Follow these steps to create your AI-powered playlist:

    1. Open the YouTube Music app on Android or iOS
    2. Go to the Library tab
    3. Tap the “New” button
    4. Select “AI Playlist”
    5. Type or speak your music preference
    6. Let the app generate your personalised playlist

Once created, you can start listening instantly.

    Is It Available for Everyone?

The AI Playlist feature is currently rolling out to YouTube Music Premium subscribers. Free users do not have access to this tool at the moment.

    Why This Matters

AI is quickly changing how people discover and enjoy music. Instead of browsing through endless songs, users can now describe exactly what they feel like listening to.

With this launch, YouTube Music is making playlist creation faster, smarter, and more personalized while directly challenging Spotify’s AI features.

As AI becomes a bigger part of music streaming, users can expect even more intelligent recommendations and tools in the future.
