Tesla’s Cybercab moved out of the concept stage on September 3, 2026. The company held an invite-only launch event in Austin, Texas, and opened paid public rides the next day. That follows a two-year gap between the vehicle’s October 2024 reveal and its commercial debut.
The Cybercab is a two-seat, all-electric robotaxi. It has no steering wheel, pedals, or side mirrors. Cameras instead of mirrors, and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software handles everything. Passengers can’t take over if something goes wrong. That makes it a bigger bet than any previous Tesla product.
It has a 219 hp motor, the battery pack holds roughly 47.6 kWh, and Tesla lists the EPA-adjusted range at close to 293 miles. Curb weight comes in at 3,113 lbs, lighter than a Model 3. The scissor doors and stripped-down cabin could signal a cost-reduction strategy.
Musk has repeatedly pointed to a sub-$30,000 target, a figure he first hinted at during the 2024 reveal. Tesla hasn’t confirmed a final sticker price for individual buyers yet.

The Austin rollout, though, is relatively small. Tesla had registered around 45 Cybercabs for commercial operation by late August. That’s shy of Musk’s long-term goal of the Cybercab eventually replacing the Model Y as Tesla’s highest-volume vehicle. For now, the Cybercab becomes part of Tesla’s robotaxi network, which already runs modified Model Y vehicles across Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa.
On September 3, the same day Cybercab started carrying paying riders, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an audit query into the vehicle. NHTSA wants to examine how Tesla self-certified the Cybercab as meeting Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, given that it skips permanently attached controls like a steering wheel, pedals, and mirrors. Tesla chose self-certification instead of applying for a temporary exemption. Amazon’s Zoox took the exemption route in 2022 and faced a similar audit in 2023. Tesla can keep running Cybercab rides in Austin while the audit proceeds.
