Apple iPhone 17 Pro vs iPhone 16 Pro: What’s New and Should You Upgrade?

Apple just dropped the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, and yes, it’s more than a phone – it’s a plot twist. Think A19 Pro chip with vapour chamber cooling (your phone now chills harder than you on a Sunday), an aluminium “plateau” design (because mountains are the new flat), and a camera trio of 48MP lenses that casually doubles as your personal paparazzi and a big upgrade. The selfie cam? 18MP, Center Stage and shooting in 8k is also possible now.

Battery life gets a gym membership—the biggest iPhone battery yet—while connectivity graduates with Apple’s new N1 networking chip, bringing Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and even Thread for your smart home flex. Of course, iOS 26 rolls in with Apple Intelligence fully unlocked, and a 3000-nit display will be a great feature.

Should you upgrade? Well, I think Apple has given us enough reasons to upgrade, with a visible design change. I’ve also included a comparison with the 16 Pro for your decision. It will be available in the USA from 19 Sept, and in India also around the same time.

    Specification iPhone 16 Pro (2024) iPhone 17 Pro (2025)
Chipset & Performance A18 Pro (3 nm), 6-core CPU, 6-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine A19 Pro (3 nm advanced), enhanced AI & efficiency
RAM & Storage ~8 GB RAM; up to 1 TB internal storage ~12 GB RAM, storage up to 2 TB
Main Camera System Triple: 48 MP wide, 48 MP ultra-wide, 12 MP telephoto (5x zoom) All 48 MP triple cameras; telephoto uses tetraprism, improved zoom; 8K video support
Front Camera 12 MP 18 MP with Center Stage dual capture support
Display 6.3″ Super Retina XDR OLED, ProMotion 120 Hz, up to ~2000 nits outdoors Similar size, brighter OLED (up to ~3,000 nits)
Battery & Charging ~3,582 mAh; wired (unclear), 25W MagSafe, 15W Qi2 wireless Larger battery (~4000 mAh rumored); supports 25W MagSafe, 25 W Qi2, faster MagSafe
Design & Build Titanium frame (Grade 5) with Ceramic Shield; lightweight, robust New full-width “camera plateau” in aluminum unibody; vapour chamber cooling added
    Connectivity Standard wireless (Wi-Fi 6, LTE/5G via modem) New in-house N1 wireless chip (Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread), advanced C1X 5G modem
Software / AI Features iOS 18 with Apple Intelligence support iOS 26 with “Liquid Glass” UI, enhanced Apple Intelligence
Price Around ₹134900 base (128 GB) Starts at ₹149,900

    Quick Highlights & Insights

    • Performance & AI: The leap to the A19 Pro chip paired with likely 12GB RAM (vs. 8GB) should boost AI features, multitasking, and overall performance, especially with the new in-house N1 wireless chipset enhancing connectivity.  Apple Intelligence, we have to really test it.
    • Camera & Imaging: A major upgrade, every lens is now 48MP with potential 8K video and dual capture (front + rear). This is a big jump from the 12MP telephoto on the 16 Pro.
    • Design & Cooling: The 17 Pro introduces a fresh aluminium unibody and vapour chamber for improved thermal management—a notable shift from the titanium design.
    • Display & Battery: Expect a brighter screen (up to ~3000 nits) and a slightly larger battery for better endurance, along with faster wireless charging. Definitely a big thumbs up
