Storage limitations can be a creator’s worst nightmare. To address this issue, SanDisk has launched a straightforward yet powerful product called the Creator Phone SSD, which allows you to expand your iPhone’s storage without the hassles of cloud services like Google Drive or OneDrive. You won’t have to worry about unreliable Wi-Fi uploads, data caps, or subscription fees anymore. Approximately the size of a credit card, this device is designed for seamless integration with iPhones through Apple’s MagSafe technology, attaching to the back of your device as if it was made for it. But is it truly compatible with all models? Let’s find out.
Design & Build
The initial impressions of the SanDisk Creator Phone SSD was impressive, showcasing a bold design with a vibrant gradient blue silicone shell that easily fits into pockets or bags. Weighing just 54 grams, it won’t add any extra burden during handheld shoots. The curved rubberized edges provide a comfortable grip for one-handed filming. Additionally, it has an IP65 rating for dust and water resistance and can withstand drops from nearly 10 feet.

A standout feature of the SSD is the integrated MagSafe ring at the bottom, allowing it to securely attach to compatible iPhones, even when they are in cases. It comes with a flexible USB-C cable for connecting to devices, and a Velcro strap helps keep the cable organized. Although the cable length may be slightly inconvenient for phone-only use, it works well with MacBooks and Android devices.
The product is further enhanced by an adhesive metal MagSafe ring, which enables you to attach the SSD to non-MagSafe surfaces like Android phones or laptops. The drive arrives pre-formatted in exFAT, making it easy to use across different platforms. It also features a lanyard loop and a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port.
It is important to note that while the SSD works seamlessly with iPhone 15 and 16 Pros, older Lightning iPhones will require an adapter, and Android users may need to adjust app permissions. Additionally, it mounts effortlessly on Macs for quick editing.
Performance
When it comes to raw power, the SanDisk Creator Phone SSD truly excels. It is designed to meet the demands of 4K ProRes workflows seamlessly. Featuring an NVMe SSD and using USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), it achieves impressive read speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 950 MB/s. In real-world benchmarks with both my iPhone 16 Pro Max and MacBook Pro, it performed remarkably well. CrystalDiskMark recorded sequential read speeds of 1,049 MB/s and write speeds of 1,010 MB/s. When used with my phone, transfer speeds averaged around 760 MB/s in both directions, making it more than fast enough for copying gigabytes of RAW photos or 4K clips in under a minute.
With a capacity of 1TB, this SSD is a game-changer for creators. While Apple’s flagship devices max out at 1TB of internal storage, recording ProRes 4K/60fps footage consumes around 12.5 GB per minute. With this SSD, I recorded over 12 minutes of ProRes footage, resulting in 158 GB of smooth 4K files, all without using up space on my phone’s 512GB drive. The SSD worked seamlessly with the free Final Cut Camera app (iOS), activating external recording mode effortlessly. Simply connect via USB-C, select the SSD as the destination, and start recording. There were no dropped frames or buffering. On Android, apps like Cinema FV-5 matched this performance, capturing over 20 hours of 4K footage across the entire 1TB. Write speeds remained around 380 MB/s during extended sessions, which is more than sufficient for real-time encoding, although there is a slight throttle after initial bursts to manage heat.

Thermal performance is solid. The drive warmed to a comfortable 45°C after 30 minutes of ProRes capture but never throttled enough to interrupt recording. The power draw is minimal, consuming little from the phone’s battery (expect about 10 hours of continuous use on a full charge without significant drain). File access is quick, and browsing folders in the Files app or editing proxies in LumaFusion was lag-free.
Regarding cross-platform transfers, a 50GB folder migrated from my Mac to the SSD in just 52 seconds, which is faster than many cloud sync services. The SSD is also backward compatible with USB 2.0, ensuring it works with legacy devices, albeit at reduced speeds.
Verdict
The SanDisk Creator Phone SSD is an excellent solution for those looking for cloud-free storage, effectively combining MagSafe convenience with professional-grade capabilities. With a capacity of 1TB, it provides ample space for extensive shoots, and its impressive speeds of 950/1,000 MB/s make ProRes recording effortless, turning your iPhone into a compact cinema rig.
The design is striking; it’s lightweight, durable, and thoughtfully accessorized. However, the blue color and cable length may not suit all discreet setups. One downside is the lack of charging passthrough, which means you’ll need to plan your battery life for long sessions, so consider grabbing a USB-C hub.
It outperforms bulkier options like the Samsung T9 in terms of phone integration. If you’re well within Apple’s ecosystem, this SSD is a must-have. Android users will also appreciate its features. SanDisk has indeed created a remarkable device that gives your phone a second chance to store data.
