Sony LinkBuds Clip Review: Ear-Resistible

The audio industry is undergoing a substantial shift in how we consume sound. For years, active noise cancellation and total acoustic isolation were the ultimate gold standards. Now, open-ear design is emerging as a highly sought-after style, catering to users who want high-quality audio without completely disconnecting from the world around them. Recognizing this growing demand, Sony has introduced the LinkBuds Clip, a pair of earbuds priced at ₹18,990. They promise an all-day comfortable fit, rich sound, and seamless smart connectivity. But is this genuinely the best open-ear TWS on the market, and more importantly, is it actually worth that premium price tag? Let’s find out.

Build and Design

The Sony LinkBuds Clip adopts an entirely new form factor, designed to clip onto your ear cartilage rather than wedge securely inside the ear canal. The earbuds feature a distinctive C-shaped silicone bridge that connects the outer battery barrel to the inner earpiece, housed in a smooth, ball-shaped casing. At first, wearing them takes a little patience and practice to hook them securely into place. However, once properly positioned, they fit comfortably and offer a barely-there, lightweight feel that is perfect for extended, all-day listening without the fatigue typical of in-ear monitors. They also have an IPX4 rating, making them resilient enough to handle light splashes and daily sweat.

The charging case, on the other hand, presents a slightly mixed experience. It features a rather boxy, upright shape that slips easily into larger jacket pockets but tends to bulge slightly in tighter jeans. The design utilizes a dual-texture aesthetic: the lower dock has a practical matte texture, while the lid boasts a high-gloss finish. Unfortunately, this glossy finish attracts fingerprint smudges and scratches easily, so everyday wear and tear will show quickly. While Sony does redeem the case slightly with a clever magnetic repulsion system that physically prevents you from putting the wrong earbud in the wrong charging slot, the lid’s hinge feels less premium than you would expect for a device approaching the ₹20,000 mark.

Features and Sound Quality

When it comes to audio performance, the sound quality is fabulous. Powered by 10mm drivers and supported by Sony’s Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE), the LinkBuds Clip delivers crisp instrumentation and beautifully natural vocals. The midrange clarity is exceptional for an open-ear design, faithfully reproducing the subtle nuances of acoustic tracks and podcasts. However, because of the earbuds’ open design, you can’t expect heavy, thumping bass. The physical gap between the speaker and your eardrum means sub-bass frequencies naturally dissipate into the air.

This open design also brings a major environmental trade-off. In a quiet office or on a peaceful evening walk, the ability to hear your music while remaining perfectly aware of conversations and traffic is incredibly convenient. But in a noisy environment like a crowded metropolitan street, a bustling train station, or a gym with loud background music, it becomes extremely difficult to hear the music from the TWS. Ambient noise can easily overpower the earbuds, even at maximum volume.

Fortunately, the app is incredibly robust. The earbuds work seamlessly with the Sony Sound Connect app, which offers custom presets and plenty of options to tailor your listening experience. You can switch between different Listening Modes, such as a ‘Voice Boost’ mode, which is excellent for highlighting speech in podcasts when you are on the move. You can also heavily customize the touch controls, allowing you to double or triple-tap the area near the earbud to play/pause, skip tracks, or instantly launch Spotify. The inclusion of Bluetooth 5.3, Google Fast Pair, and multi-device connection works flawlessly across laptops and smartphones.

Battery Life

Despite their lightweight and minimal design, the LinkBuds Clip packs impressive endurance. Overall battery life is very good, delivering on Sony’s claim of up to 9 hours of continuous playback on the earbuds themselves, though we got up to 8 hours max. With the charging case, you get enough total power for up to 37 hours of listening before needing a wall outlet.

When you do run out of power, the case quickly charges the buds and gives good battery life in a pinch. A one-minute quick charge yields roughly an hour and 20 minutes of audio playback, which is a lifesaver when you are rushing out the door. The only noticeable omission in this premium price bracket is the lack of wireless charging, meaning you will have to rely strictly on a wired Type-C connection to top up the case.
