OPPO Reno 16 Review: A Creative Powerhouse for Young Users

I’ve been using the OPPO Reno 16 as my daily driver for the past few weeks, and it has quickly become one of the most fun mid-range smartphones I’ve tested. The Reno series has always targeted style-conscious users in India who love photography and content creation, and the Reno 16 takes that to the next level with its “Trendsetting AI Camera” focus. After living with it, shooting hundreds of photos, recording videos, and editing on the go, here’s my detailed personal review and experience.

Build & Design

The unit I received is in the striking Twilight Violet colour. It looks unique and premium, a deep shade that appears almost black in low light but reveals rich violet tones when it catches the sun. The matte finish on the back is excellent; it feels smooth yet grippy, and best of all, fingerprints are almost invisible. The phone features a slim, ergonomic design, but sharp edges make it a bit uncomfortable to hold for extended periods. The camera module is prominent and well-balanced, but it wobbles when used lying flat on the table.

Performance

The Reno 16 runs on ColorOS 16, which features strong AI integration. In my experience, it handles everyday tasks very smoothly. App switching is quick, and scrolling through social media is fluid. The AI features in the camera app respond almost instantly, and I didn’t experience any significant lag when multitasking between the camera, gallery, Instagram, and messaging apps. It is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 processor, which is quite decent for a mid-range phone. The device comes with a minimum of 8GB of RAM, but you can choose a 12GB variant if you tend to multitask heavily.

For a camera-focused phone, the performance is well-tuned. The AI tools feel intelligent and fast, whether it’s suggesting edits or processing collages. I played some casual games like BGMI and Asphalt at medium settings, and it performed decently without excessive heating during shorter sessions. It’s not a dedicated gaming phone, but for my usage, it delivers reliable performance throughout the day. ColorOS 16 feels polished, with useful AI optimizations that prioritize camera tasks when needed.

Camera

This is the section I was most excited about, and the Reno 16 did not disappoint. The hardware includes a 50MP Ultra-Clear Main Camera, 50MP Ultra-Wide Selfie Camera (100° field of view), 50MP Ultra-Wide Camera, and a 50MP 3.5x Telephoto Portrait Camera.

The camera performs exceptionally well across various conditions, delivering sharp, vibrant, and detailed photos particularly in daylight and portrait settings. The 3.5x telephoto lens stands out by creating beautiful portraits with natural compression and excellent subject separation, while authentic skin tones are achieved through Natural Tone Imaging. For landscapes and group photos, the ultra-wide shots easily accommodate everyone in the frame, maintaining good edge detail. In low-light situations, the Dual Flash System and AI processing help produce usable shots with decent clarity, although some noise may appear in very dark environments. The video capabilities are equally impressive, offering 4K 60fps HDR recording across all focal lengths. Features like stabilization and Retouch, and the ability to switch between lenses while recording feels seamless, making the camera ideal for vlogs and travel clips.

Battery Life

In my real-world usage, which includes heavy camera use (photos and videos), social media, some streaming, and occasional gaming, the Reno 16 comfortably lasts a full day with 20-30% battery remaining by bedtime. On lighter days, primarily consisting of camera use and browsing, it can easily last up to 1.5 days. The fast charging feature is quick enough to recharge during breaks, and the efficient ColorOS 16 along with AI power management contributes significantly to battery performance.
