Thomson has entered the Smart TV market with its Masterclass Series 2025 Edition, which includes the TH65QDMini1022, a 65-inch Ultra HD 4K Mini LED Google TV. This model offers premium features, such as Mini LED backlighting, once exclusive to high-end flagship models, at a more affordable price of around ₹61,999.
Positioned as an accessible option for advanced display technology, the TH65QDMini1022 boasts impressive specifications, including a peak brightness of 1500 nits, Dolby Vision HDR support, and a powerful 108W audio system. We have spent several weeks testing this TV through binge-watching series, gaming sessions, and everyday streaming to determine if it truly lives up to the hype.
Design & Build
First impressions matter, and the TH65QDMini1022 nails them with its near-bezel-less design. The slim frame encases a massive 164 cm (65-inch) panel, creating a true edge-to-edge viewing experience that draws you in like a theatre screen. The front features understated elegance, with a matte black finish and subtle Thomson branding at the bottom, making it a universal fit for modern living rooms. Weighing in at about 20 kg without the stand, it’s sturdy yet manageable for two people to handle during setup.
On the back, things get interesting. The TV houses an array of eight speakers, including a dedicated subwoofer, which we’ll dive into later. The build feels premium for the price, using a mix of plastic and metal accents that resist fingerprints and smudges.
That said, our setup wasn’t entirely smooth sailing. Wall-mounting proved tricky; the included mount didn’t align perfectly with the manual’s illustrations, which appeared to be taken from an older model. It took approximately 45 minutes of trial and error with a drill to secure it properly. Once up, though, it transformed our space into a cinematic haven.
Display & Picture Quality
At the heart of the TH65QDMini1022 is its Mini LED panel, a technology that uses thousands of tiny LEDs for precise local dimming zones, up to 512 in this model, resulting in deeper blacks, higher contrast, and reduced blooming compared to standard LEDs. The 4K UHD resolution (3840 x 2160) shines on this 65-inch canvas, delivering sharp details whether you’re watching the intricate scales in Dune or the fast-paced action in The Superman.
Peak brightness reaches an impressive 1500 nits, making HDR content stand out even in brightly lit rooms. During daytime tests with windows open, scenes from Stranger Things retained vivid colours without washing out, thanks to the 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and wide 178-degree viewing angle. No off-axis colour shifts here, family movie nights from the couch’s edge look just as stunning. The 120Hz refresh rate ensures smooth motion handling, with AI Smooth Motion tech minimizing judder in sports like cricket matches.
Picture calibration is user-friendly with six modes: Standard for everyday viewing, Vivid for punchy colours, Movie for cinematic accuracy, Game for low-latency responsiveness (under 10ms input lag, great for PS5 gaming), Sport for dynamic action, and User for tweaks. Dolby Vision and HDR10 support upgrade streaming from Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar, with quantum dot enhancements boosting colour gamut to over 90% DCI-P3. In our tests, skin tones in Oppenheimer were natural, and explosions burst with realistic fire hues.
That said, in very dark rooms, some minor backlight uniformity issues crept in during uniform grey scenes, a common trait of Mini LEDs at this price. Still, for ₹62k, the picture quality rivals pricier QLEDs. It’s a step up from Thomson’s previous LED offerings, demonstrating the worth of Mini LED in the mid-range.
Software
Powered by Google TV OS on a Mediatek processor, with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, the TH65QDMini1022 handles multitasking like a champ. Booting up takes seconds, and app navigation is fluid, with no noticeable lag when switching between YouTube, Prime Video, and Hotstar. The interface is intuitive, with personalized recommendations based on viewing habits, and over 10,000 apps available via the Google Play Store. Voice search via built-in Google Assistant works reliably, though it occasionally mishears accents in noisier environments.
Sound Quality
Audio is often overlooked in TV reviews, but the TH65QDMini1022 stands out with its impressive 108W output from eight speakers, which includes a subwoofer. The integration of Dolby Atmos and Digital Plus processing creates an immersive surround sound experience, delivering clear dialogue, powerful bass, and engaging height effects, especially in Atmos titles like Top Gun: Maverick.
In our living room tests, the audio was powerful enough to mask ambient noise without needing a soundbar, providing a theatre-like rumble for action movies. The subwoofer effectively handles low-end frequencies, causing the stand to vibrate during bass-heavy tracks. However, pushing the volume to max can introduce slight distortion at peak levels.
Verdict
The Thomson TH65QDMini1022 stands out as a budget TV that makes Mini LED technology accessible. It offers vibrant visuals, impressive sound quality, and smart features, making it an excellent choice for families seeking an immersive big-screen experience without overspending.
While there are minor issues like setup challenges and distortion at high volume, these don’t overshadow the overall enjoyment. This TV provides great value and highlights Thomson’s comeback in the Indian market. If you’re looking for 65 inches of future-proof entertainment, this is a fantastic option for your next binge-watching session.
