What are NPCs? Non-playable characters, shortened to NPCs, play a crucial role in enhancing the immersive experience of a game. Their behaviour can make or break the immersion while gaming. Their patterns and interactions with the world around them severely impact how enjoyable a game can be for the player. The more realism, the better.

Which are the best games with the best NPC behaviour?

The Last of Us Part II

The number of times I have been caught by the NPC enemies is countless. I did not expect the NPC behaviour to be quite this improved and smart. In The Last of Us Part II, NPCs showcase highly realistic behaviour. They now communicate with each other, call out the player’s position, and respond dynamically to the player’s actions. For example, the enemy group named the Seraphites have specific whistles for each other, and each of them means something different. Depending on how the player acts, their callouts will be different. This realism enhances immersion, making players feel like they are part of a living, breathing world. It makes the horror of the game more exciting and terrifying. You become part of the hunt in TLOU2. If you happen to drag out defeating an enemy, they will even begin begging for their life.

    Platforms: PlayStation 4 & PlayStation 5

    Red Dead Redemption 2

The NPCs in Red Dead Redemption 2 are designed to elicit emotional responses from the player. Your main protagonist, Arthur Morgan, interacts with NPCs in a more personal way. It actually ended up bringing me closer to Arthur himself. You end up learning more about Arthur inadvertently. Moreover, the NPCs remember the player’s actions, react to them, and form bonds with the player, which deepens the story’s emotional impact. Of course, get ready for them to be quite angry at your actions.

    Panicore

In Panicore, NPCs have varying levels of awareness and autonomy. The biggest feature of Panicore is the enemies can not only track your footsteps but also your voice. Yes, it is microphone-activated. Their behaviour is not fully scripted, which leads to unpredictable and anxiety-level gameplay. However, what I was personally not prepared for was for the enemies to mimic my own voice in-game. Still, while it was anxiety-inducing, it kept the game fresh and one of the best in horror.

    Grand Theft Auto V

The most chaotic of the list definitely goes to this famous game. Grand Theft Auto V features a highly interactive open world where NPCs go about their daily lives, react to the player’s actions, and even interact with each other. While it isn’t entirely detailed, the way NPCs hurl insults at you is hilarious and makes the player create even more chaos. Or maybe that’s just how I like to play it. Regardless of the play style, the NPCs’ varied reactions to events contribute to the game’s chaotic and entertaining environment. Whether it’s a police chase or a spontaneous street fight, there’s always something weird around the corner in GTAV.

Platform: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows, PlayStation 5, & Xbox Series X/S

    Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Let’s bring something more comforting and cosy to the table. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, NPCs are critical in creating a warm and welcoming community. Each NPC has a unique personality, specific preferences, and schedules. Players can interact with them, develop friendships, and even influence their behaviour. Sometimes, you even have to convince NPCs to join your island. You won’t have the same NPCs on your island at the beginning as your friend who might be playing this. That’s what makes the island development more fun.
