Yoga, an ancient practice rooted in Indian philosophy, has evolved into various styles that cater to different needs and preferences. Whether you’re aiming for better physical fitness, mental relaxation, or spiritual growth, there’s a yoga style that can suit your goals.

Here’s a guide to help you find the right one for your specific needs and lifestyle

    Hatha Yoga

    Best for: Beginners

Hatha yoga is a gentle introduction to the most basic yoga postures. If you’re a newcomer, this style is ideal because it’s slower-paced and focuses mostly on the fundamentals. Hatha sessions often include breathing exercises (called pranayama) and simple meditations, making it a well-rounded option for overall wellness.

    Vinyasa Yoga

Best for: Those who like fast-paced exercises

Vinyasa yoga is known for its fluid transitions between poses and for synchronising the exercise with the breath. It’s a more vigorous exercise than Hatha and is suited for those who enjoy a more athletic style of yoga. Vinyasa helps improve cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, and muscle tone.

    Ashtanga Yoga

Best for: Experienced yoga enthusiasts seeking a structured practice

Ashtanga is a rigorous style that follows a specific sequence of postures. It’s physically demanding and requires discipline, making it suitable for those with a strong commitment to their practice. It offers a great way to build strength, flexibility, and stamina all the while promoting mental clarity and inner peace.

    Iyengar Yoga

Best for: Detail-oriented individuals and those with injuries

Iyengar yoga emphasises precise alignment and often uses supports like blocks, straps, and chairs. This methodical approach makes it accessible for people with physical limitations or those recovering from injuries. Iyengar yoga is excellent for building strength, stability, and a deep understanding of the body’s mechanics.

    Bikram or Hot Yoga

Best for: Those who prefer a structured, hot environment

Bikram yoga, also known as hot yoga, consists of a fixed sequence of 26 postures practised in a heated room. The high temperature aims to increase flexibility, detoxify the body, and build endurance. This style is perfect for those who enjoy a consistent routine and can handle intense heat.

    Kundalini Yoga

Best for: Those who are deeply seeking spirituality and inner energy

Kundalini yoga focuses on awakening the kundalini energy located at the base of the spine. It combines postures, breathwork, chanting, and meditation to enrich spiritual growth and self-awareness. This style is suitable for those looking to deepen their spiritual practice and want to undergo profound inner transformation.

    Yin Yoga

Best for: Those desiring relaxation and stress relief

Yin yoga involves holding passive postures for extended periods, typically three to five minutes. This style targets the connective tissues and joints, promoting flexibility and relaxation. Yin yoga is ideal for those needing to balance a fast-paced lifestyle or intense workout routine with deep, meditative stretches.

    Restorative Yoga

Best for: Deep relaxation and recovery

Restorative yoga uses props to support the body in restful postures. It’s a soothing practice that focuses on relaxation and stress reduction. This style is perfect for anyone looking to unwind, recover from physical exertion, or manage stress and anxiety.
