In an era where creators are redefining storytelling with smartphones, mirrorless cameras, and hybrid tools, Sony is stepping up to fuel their cinematic ambitions with the FX2, a compact yet powerful addition to its acclaimed Cinema Line.

In this exclusive conversation, Mukesh Srivastava, Head of Imaging Business at Sony India, shares how the FX2 bridges the gap between professional performance and everyday usability. Designed for students, indie filmmakers, and solo creators, the FX2 promises to make high-quality filmmaking more accessible, agile, and intuitive than ever before.

From the brand’s mission to support India’s rapidly growing creator economy to its long-term vision for professional and consumer camera segments, Srivastava sheds light on how Sony is shaping the future of visual storytelling, one filmmaker at a time.

ex: The FX2 has been described as a camera designed for young and emerging filmmakers. What gap in the market is Sony addressing with this launch?

We recognise that while young filmmakers and students have boundless creativity, they are often held back by cameras that are either too expensive or too complicated for independent use. The FX2 camera is our answer, a compact Full-Frame Cinema Line hybrid camera designed for the next generation of creators that’s both accessible and portable, filling the key gap between professional results and ease-of-use. With the launch of FX2, we are aiming to empower aspiring filmmakers, students, independent videographers and content creators to enhance their creative vision, no matter their level of experience or crew size.

ex: The FX2 comes with an ultra-portable design, ideal for solo operators and small crews. How do you see this impacting independent and small-budget filmmaking in India?

Independent and small-budget filmmakers in India often work with limited crew sizes, constrained budgets, and fast production timelines. They need equipment that can deliver cinematic results without the high costs and logistical challenges of traditional cinema cameras.

The FX2’s ergonomic build and uniquely tiltable Electric View Finder (EVF) make it a top choice for solo creators seeking adaptability and comfort. The camera is designed to empower storytellers to shoot anywhere, from bustling city scenes and classroom environments to remote outdoor locations, while enjoying mobility and minimal setup, which allows the creators to scale their productions and craft stories with energy and spontaneity, even with limited resources. Further, the camera usability is enhanced with the availability of multiple screw holes, which help mount different accessories like a monitor, recorder, side handles, etc.

ex: What kind of flexibility and efficiency do these new features bring compared to previous models in the FX series?

When compared to previous models in the FX series, the FX2 offers various upgrades in flexibility and efficiency. The camera comes with a tiltable EVF, a first for the Cinema Line, giving creators more framing options, especially in bright or challenging lighting conditions.

The newly added Log Shooting Mode menu enables shooting up to 33MP resolution stills for colour grading in the post-production process. This feature allows users to capture still images from the recorded movies within the camera. The new FX2 camera is designed with enhanced autofocus powered by a dedicated AI processing unit, which delivers more accurate and responsive subject tracking. The user interface is simplified with the user-friendly BIG6 home screen, allowing quick access to six key shooting parameters on a single display.

These combined innovations make the FX2 more efficient to operate and more adaptable to diverse shooting environments than its predecessors.

ex: Who do you see as the primary audience for the FX2 in India—students, indie filmmakers, content creators, or professionals looking for a second camera?

The FX2 camera is a game-changer product built for the new generation of solo content creators and aspiring students. We are excited to see how these creators use it to bring their ideas to life. At the same time, it is an ideal choice for professionals as well who want something lightweight and versatile without compromising on quality. With its powerful features and user-friendly design, FX2 is built to support creators at every stage of their journey.

ex: India has a rapidly growing community of digital creators and filmmakers. How does Sony plan to support this ecosystem alongside the FX2 launch?

At Sony India, we recognise the role that digital creators and filmmakers play in shaping the future of visual storytelling. With the launch of the FX2, our goal is not only to provide new-age technology but also to encourage the creative community through a strong support ecosystem.

One of our key initiatives in this direction is the Sony Alpha Community—a dynamic platform designed to bring together both amateur and professional creators. For those looking to deepen their knowledge, our Alpha Classroom provides structured tutorials led by industry experts covering everything from the basics of filmmaking to colour grading. Additionally, with our ‘Ask an Expert’ service, creators can book one-on-one sessions with specialists to get personalised guidance on a free-of-cost basis. Through these initiatives, we are building a holistic environment where creators can learn, collaborate and grow.

ex: With the FX2 launch, how is Sony looking at the evolution of professional and consumer camera segments in the next 3–5 years?

Creators today are transforming the way stories are told — experimenting with formats, blending genres, and pushing visual boundaries like never before. This shift has even been recognised at the highest levels, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji highlighting the rise of this creator economy at this year’s WAVES Summit. What defines this new wave of storytellers is their constant search for advanced cinematic tools that can bring their vision to life and make their storytelling truly complete.

At Sony India, we are deeply committed to empowering this community with intuitive, powerful, and flexible tools that grow with their creativity. We understand that the needs of storytellers are evolving — from the social media creator capturing everyday moments, to the independent filmmaker chasing bold narratives, to industry professionals crafting cinema for the big screen. That’s why our portfolio spans across categories, with the Alpha series designed to serve the professional & consumer market, and our Cinema Line — led by the flagship VENICE — built for the most demanding filmmakers.

Today, we are proud to say that whether you are a creator with just 2,000 followers, an influencer reaching 2 million, or an established professional behind blockbuster productions, Sony has the right tools to match your vision. From the Alpha range to the Cinema Line, we don’t just offer cameras — we offer pathways for every creator to grow, experiment, and tell their stories in the most cinematic way possible.

ex: How does the FX2 & the entire Cinema Line set itself apart in the competitive landscape?

Filmmaking as a genre is rapidly evolving, and with it comes the demand for cameras that push beyond the conventional limits of visual storytelling. Today’s creators seek tools that not only deliver cinematic image quality but also provide the flexibility to handle diverse forms of content creation. Sony, a pioneer in the video segment, continues to lead this transformation with one of the strongest and most versatile line-ups — designed to enable a broader spectrum of multimedia creation, even starting from our entry-level models.

Our Cinema Line is built with creators at every stage in mind. The journey begins with the FX30, an ideal choice for aspiring filmmakers who are ready to upgrade their video-making skills. Stepping up, the FX2 is designed specifically for students and solo creators who want professional-grade cinematic tools in a compact and intuitive package. The FX3 then bridges the gap, offering a high-end yet versatile solution that has become a trusted companion for both solo creators and professional filmmakers. At the pinnacle is VENICE & BURANO, our flagship cameras engineered for big-budget commercials and films, alongside the FR7, a groundbreaking full-frame PTZ camera that expands creative possibilities.

What truly sets Sony’s Cinema Line apart is its unified ecosystem. All cameras share the same renowned colour science, making intercutting footage across models seamless. In addition, the consistent user interface ensures an effortless transition for creators as they scale up, allowing anyone — from a student to a seasoned professional — to work confidently across the range.
