Equal AI: Finally, Android Users in India Get Pixel-Style Call Screening

For years, Google’s Pixel phones have had one of the smartest and most practical AI features, namely Call Screening. It serves the basic yet highly useful function of answering unknown numbers using an AI voice and showing a live transcript of the conversation. Unfortunately, Indian users never got to experience it, no matter how many Pixel generations came and went. Now, a new app called Equal AI finally brings that capability to every Android user, and I’m pleased to report, it works surprisingly well.

Meet Your New AI Call Assistant

Equal AI introduces itself as your AI call assistant. One that answers unknown calls for you, transcribes them in real-time, and even lets you decide whether you want to pick up, ignore, or let AI handle everything. After each call, you get a full text transcript and a single audio file containing both voices, making it easy to replay the entire conversation if needed.

    Real-World Experience

I’ve been using Equal AI for the past few days, and it’s already saved me from multiple spam and delivery calls. But one instance really stood out. My car mechanic called me from an unknown number while I was in a meeting. Equal picked it up instantly, and by the time I checked the live transcript, I already knew what he was calling about. In case you’re curious, it was a loose brake line that needed replacement. I didn’t have to pick up the phone, yet I understood everything.

    Almost Human Voices

What impressed me most was how natural and human-like the assistant’s voice sounds. There are even two voice options, both polite and well-modulated. It’s only the slight pauses between replies that give the callers a hint that they’re listening to AI. Otherwise, callers genuinely respond as if they’re speaking to a real person.

    How Equal Makes It Possible

Interestingly, what makes Equal AI possible in India when Google’s own Call Screening isn’t available comes down to how it’s built. Unlike Google’s server-dependent system, Equal AI seems to be locally designed and compliant with Indian data laws, processing calls on-device or through regionally hosted servers.
Seemingly, it doesn’t rely on deep Android integration but instead uses call forwarding and virtual answering techniques to simulate the experience. By keeping users fully aware and in control, it neatly avoids the regulatory hurdles that stopped Google.

    The Verdict

Equal AI handles spam gracefully, declines unnecessary calls politely, and delivers concise post-call summaries that feel like having a personal assistant manage your daily interruptions. It’s Android-only for now, but an iOS version is on the way. For Indian users who’ve long envied Google’s exclusive call-screening feature, Equal AI is a game-changer. One that finally lets your phone talk before you have to.
