Apple Just Downgraded the iPhone 17 Pro Camera and Fans Are Furious

Apple has officially confirmed a surprising camera limitation on its newest flagship smartphones. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max no longer support Night mode in Portrait mode. What makes this more shocking is that even much older Pro models such as the iPhone 12 Pro from 2020 still offer this feature.

Users initially believed the issue was a software glitch after Night mode failed to activate during Portrait shots. However, Apple has now clarified through its support documentation that the feature is simply not supported on the iPhone 17 Pro series.

Users First Spotted the Problem in Real World Use

Soon after the iPhone 17 Pro reached customers, multiple users reported that Night mode refused to turn on while using Portrait mode even in very dark environments. On older Pro iPhones, the camera automatically switches to Night mode in such conditions.

Some users also discovered another limitation. Even when they captured a normal Night mode photo of a person, the image did not store depth information. This means those photos cannot be converted into Portrait images later, which was possible on earlier Pro models.

One frustrated user summed it up clearly on Apple’s forum by saying that Night mode never activates in Portrait mode no matter how dark the scene is.

Apple Officially Confirms the Missing Feature

Apple’s updated support page now clearly lists the iPhones that support Night mode in Portrait mode. The list includes several older Pro models but completely excludes the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.

Supported models include the iPhone 12 Pro and later Pro generations up to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. The newest iPhone 17 Pro models do not appear on this list at all.

Apple does confirm that Night mode still works for selfies and time lapse videos on the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and the newly launched iPhone Air.

Why Apple May Have Removed Night Mode Portrait

Apple has not shared any official explanation for removing Night mode Portrait from its latest Pro models. However, several theories are circulating in the tech community.

Some experts believe the new camera hardware may process images differently, affecting how depth data is captured in low light. Others think it could simply be a software limitation that Apple might fix through a future iOS update.

Until Apple addresses the issue directly, the reason behind this downgrade remains unclear.

Why Night Mode Is So Important for Portrait Photography

Night mode is designed to improve photos taken in low light by increasing exposure time. This helps the camera capture more light, preserve details, reduce noise and brighten shadows. Exposure can range from less than a second to several seconds depending on lighting.

When combined with Portrait mode, Night mode helps create sharp subject separation, clearer facial details and more natural background blur in dark environments. Its absence on a premium Pro model is being viewed as a major drawback by photography enthusiasts.

    Final Verdict

The removal of Night mode Portrait on the iPhone 17 Pro has come as an unpleasant surprise for users, especially when even five year old Pro iPhones still support the feature. As scrutiny around the iPhone 17 lineup continues to grow, this missing camera capability only adds to the criticism. Whether Apple plans to fix it through a future update remains to be seen.
