Discord is rolling out a major update focused on age verification and teen safety, and it could change how millions of users access the platform. Starting March, users who fail to confirm their age may face account restrictions, as Discord moves to a stricter, safety-first model for both new and existing accounts.
Discord to enforce age verification in phases
According to Discord’s official blog, the new age verification system will be introduced gradually. Users who have not verified their age using either a face scan or a government-issued ID will be placed under restricted default settings. These limits are designed to reduce exposure to sensitive content and features until age confirmation is complete.
The rollout applies to everyone on Discord, not just new sign-ups, making it one of the platform’s most significant policy shifts so far.
Teen-by-default approach explained
Discord says the update is part of its new “teen-by-default” strategy. Under this approach, all accounts will initially operate in a safer, age-appropriate environment. To unlock adult-only features or access sensitive content, users may need to prove they are over 18.
This affects access to age-restricted servers and channels, certain app commands, advanced message settings, and other features considered unsuitable for younger users.
How Discord age verification works
Users will have multiple options to verify their age. One method is facial age estimation, which requires a short video selfie processed directly on the user’s device. Another option involves submitting a government-issued ID through Discord’s verification partners.
Discord is also introducing an age inference system that runs in the background. If the system needs more clarity, users may be asked to complete additional verification steps.
Privacy safeguards built into verification
Discord has emphasized that privacy is a core part of the new system. Age verification prompts will appear only within the Discord app, never through email or text messages.
The company says video selfies used for facial age checks stay on the user’s device, while ID documents are deleted quickly, often immediately after verification. A user’s verification status will not be visible to others, and users can appeal or retry the process through account settings.
New safety settings for all users
Alongside age checks, Discord is tightening default safety controls. Sensitive content will be blurred by default unless a user is verified as an adult. Only verified adults will be allowed to access age-gated spaces, speak on stage in servers, or modify certain direct message settings.
Messages from unfamiliar users will be redirected to a separate inbox, and warning prompts will appear when receiving friend requests from unknown accounts.
Part of a wider industry shift
Discord says teen safety remains a top priority and that these changes build on protections already introduced in regions like the UK and Australia. The company is now expanding the approach globally.
Other major platforms are making similar moves. YouTube has expanded supervised accounts and content filters for younger users, while Meta has added age checks and safety tools across its apps to limit teen access to sensitive content.
With age verification becoming the new norm, Discord’s latest update signals a broader shift toward stricter online safety standards across the tech industry.
