Google to Bring AirDrop-Like File Sharing to More Android Phones Beyond Pixel

Google is preparing to expand Android’s Quick Share interoperability with Apple’s AirDrop to a wider range of Android smartphones, moving beyond its current Pixel-only availability. The feature, which enables cross-platform file sharing between Android and Apple devices, is expected to roll out to more phones later this year.

According to a report by Android Authority, Google has confirmed that it is actively working with multiple smartphone brands to extend the feature across the broader Android ecosystem. This move signals a major step toward seamless file sharing between Android phones and iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.

Quick Share AirDrop Support Expanding Beyond Pixel

At present, Android’s Quick Share can communicate directly with Apple’s AirDrop, but the functionality is limited to the Pixel 10 series. With this integration, Pixel users can send and receive files instantly from nearby Apple devices without relying on third-party apps.

However, Google’s plans go far beyond Pixel devices. Nothing, the UK-based smartphone brand, has already confirmed that it is working with Google to bring AirDrop interoperability to its phones. Additionally, Qualcomm has stated that Android smartphones powered by Snapdragon processors will soon support cross-platform file sharing with Apple devices.

Google Quietly Prepared for a Wider Rollout

Behind the scenes, Google has been laying the groundwork for this expansion. Instead of keeping AirDrop support locked to Pixel-exclusive system software, Google reportedly upgraded Quick Share from a system stub into a full APK, complete with its own Play Store listing.

This change strongly suggests that AirDrop compatibility is now being treated as a core Quick Share feature, rather than a Pixel-only advantage. It also makes it easier for Google to deploy updates across multiple Android brands.

More Android Phones to Get AirDrop Compatibility in 2026

Eric Kay, Vice President of Engineering for the Android platform at Google’s Taipei office, reportedly confirmed that the feature will reach many more Android devices in 2026. He noted that Google spent significant time ensuring reliable compatibility with Apple devices before beginning wider testing with hardware partners.

Kay added that now the system has matured, Google is working closely with Android manufacturers to expand support, with official announcements expected soon. While specific phone models and brands have not yet been named, the statement strongly indicates that AirDrop-style file sharing will soon become common across Android devices.

A Big Step Toward Cross-Platform Sharing

If rolled out widely, this update could significantly reduce friction between Android and Apple users, making it easier to share photos, videos, and documents instantly regardless of platform. As Google continues collaborating with device makers, Android users may soon enjoy true AirDrop-like convenience without switching ecosystems.
