Apple has officially started rolling out iOS 26 to compatible iPhones, bringing its brand-new Liquid Glass design language. The update transforms the iPhone interface with transparent, glass-like effects across app icons, menus, and system elements. While it looks futuristic, the drastic change may not appeal to everyone. That’s why Apple is also offering an alternate update iOS 18.7 for users who prefer stability over a complete visual overhaul.
iOS 26 vs iOS 18.7: Which Should You Choose?
If you’re ready for a fresh look, iOS 26 introduces the Liquid Glass redesign with ripple animations and translucent visuals. But major updates often come with short-term trade-offs. Apple warns that background processes like reindexing after installation may temporarily affect performance, battery life, and heating.
On the other hand, iOS 18.7 focuses on security, stability, and bug fixes, skipping the flashy design update. This makes it the safer choice for users who want reliable performance without the experimental interface changes.
How to Install iOS 18.7 Instead of iOS 26
Apple gives users the option to install either version. Here’s how to choose iOS 18.7:
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- You’ll see both iOS 26 and iOS 18.7 listed.
- Select Download and Install under iOS 18.7.
- Once downloaded, tap Install Now or schedule it for later.
This way, you get the latest security updates without switching to the new Liquid Glass design.

Already Updated to iOS 26? Here’s How to Tone Down the Look
If you’ve already installed iOS 26 but find the transparent UI too distracting, Apple’s accessibility settings can help make the interface clearer.
- Reduce Transparency: Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, then enable Reduce Transparency to darken backgrounds.
- Increase Contrast: In the same menu, turn on Increase Contrast to make text and menus stand out.
- Resizing App Icons: Long-press your home screen, select Edit, then switch to Tinted icons for a sharper look with less transparency.
These tweaks won’t completely remove the Liquid Glass effects, but they will make the UI easier on the eyes.
Should You Upgrade Now or Wait?
If you love bold design changes and don’t mind minor performance hiccups, iOS 26 is worth exploring. But if you prefer consistency, battery efficiency, and stability, iOS 18.7 is the smarter upgrade for now. Apple is expected to refine the Liquid Glass interface in future updates, making the transition smoother over time.
