Lumio Wants to Replace Your TV Remote With WhatsApp and Instagram

Lumio has announced the launch of its latest innovation, titled Project Neo. Rather than introducing another TV or projector to the market, the company has come up with a new way to control your existing TVs, and that too, using something people already use every day –  WhatsApp and Instagram.

Built into Lumio’s TLDR app, Project Neo enters public beta from today, allowing users of Lumio Vision TVs and Arc projectors to discover and launch content simply by messaging the AI assistant in natural language. Users can search for a movie or show by title, actor, director, genre, mood, language or even a vague plot description, eliminating the need to type using a TV remote or jump endlessly between streaming platforms. The assistant also supports multiple Indian languages, with nine currently available during the beta phase.

One of Neo’s more interesting capabilities is its integration with Instagram. Spot a movie poster, trailer or recommendation while scrolling, share it directly with Neo, and the system identifies the content before sending it to the TLDR app on your television or projector. It’s an elegant attempt to bridge the gap between content discovery on smartphones and actual viewing on the big screen.

Editorially, this feels like a more meaningful innovation than yet another incremental bump in refresh rates or processing power. For years, TV manufacturers have focused on hardware upgrades while leaving one of the biggest pain points untouched—finding something worth watching. Lumio’s approach shifts the conversation towards intent-based software, where the TV understands what you want instead of forcing you to navigate menus.

Project Neo is currently available in public beta via a Play Store update and remains exclusive to Lumio Vision TVs and Lumio Arc Projectors. Whether conversational AI becomes the next standard for television navigation remains to be seen, but Lumio is making an early—and compelling—case for it.
