Microsoft officially closed down Skype on May 5, 2025, marking the end of an era for one of the most widely used video calling services. The US technology company had in February 2025 announced its intention to retire Skype as part of ongoing efforts to consolidate its communication platforms. Moving forward, Microsoft will focus its communication and collaboration services around Microsoft Teams (Free).

On February 28, Microsoft stated in a blog post that phasing out Skype would allow the company to better adapt to evolving consumer behavior. As the transition began, Microsoft ended the sale of Skype Credit and calling feature plans for new users. However, existing subscribers can continue using their plans through the end of their billing cycle. Additionally, any remaining Skype credit will still be valid. The Skype Dial Pad will remain available to paid users via the Skype web portal and within Microsoft Teams, even after May 5, 2025.

    Microsoft Teams and Skype

From February through May, Microsoft provided a transition period to help users migrate to Teams. Users can log in to Microsoft Teams with existing Skype credentials, with data and settings transferred automatically. For those not interested in making the switch, there’s an option to export data, including chat history, contacts, and call logs. Microsoft Teams retains core Skype features and enhances them with calendar integration, community spaces, and tools for deeper collaboration.

    Alternatives to Skype in 2025

If you’re searching for platforms with Skype-like features, here are two reliable alternatives:

    • Google Meet: Free with a Google account, Google Meet supports video calls with up to 100 participants, screen sharing, and meeting recordings. Group calls on the free version are limited to 60 minutes. Paid plans unlock extended meeting durations and advanced features.
    • Zoom: Widely used for web conferencing, Zoom hosts up to 100 participants per session. It includes public/private chat, screen sharing, virtual whiteboards, note-taking tools, and meeting recording, with or without transcription functionality.

    Conclusion

The retirement of Skype marks a significant shift in Microsoft’s communication strategy, reflecting the evolving needs of users in a hybrid and remote-first world. By consolidating its services into Microsoft Teams, the company aims to offer a more unified and collaborative experience. While existing Skype users are supported during the transition, a range of alternatives like Google Meet and Zoom remain available for those seeking different options. As of May 5, 2025, Teams stands as Microsoft’s flagship platform for communication and collaboration.

    • 1. What about chat history and contacts on Skype?

Chats and Contacts will automatically transfer to Teams Free when you log in with your Skype credentials

    • 2. What if the User doesn’t want to switch to Teams Free?

Skype will no longer be available after 5 May 2025

    • 3. Can users still purchase Skype products?

As of now, new purchases for Skype Subscriptions, Skype Numbers, and Skype Credit are no longer available.

    • 4. What about ongoing subscriptions and Skype Numbers?

Calling and Skype Number subscriptions will auto-renew only until April 3, 2025. After that, users can continue to use them until their respective expiration dates. From May 2025, users will need to rely on Teams Free or the web portal to manage these services.
