OpenAI is deploying its latest artificial intelligence (AI) models, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini, into ChatGPT, marking a significant update to its AI offerings. Last month, these models were introduced through the Application Programming Interface (API) alongside GPT-4.1 nano. Now, two of the three models, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4.1 mini, are being launched into ChatGPT, effectively replacing GPT-4.0 mini.

Enhanced Capabilities for Developers and IT Firms

Designed to meet the needs of software engineers and IT companies, the GPT-4.1 series is the direct successor to the GPT-4o series. These models bring substantial innovations in coding, instruction-following, and long-context comprehension.

In a blog post highlighting model improvements, OpenAI noted:

“These models outperform GPT‑4o and GPT‑4o mini across the board, with major gains in coding and instruction following. They also have larger context windows supporting up to 1 million tokens of context and are able to better use that context with improved long-context comprehension. They feature a refreshed knowledge cut-off of June 2024.”

Availability of the OpenAI GPT-4.1 Model Family

OpenAI confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that GPT-4.1 is now accessible through the model picker in ChatGPT for paid subscription users, including ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team plans.
Free-tier users will not have access to the GPT-4.1 models.

Enterprise and Education (Edu) accounts will receive the update soon.

    GPT-4.1 vs GPT-4o: Key Improvements

OpenAI has detailed substantial improvements in the GPT-4.1 model family, especially in coding tasks. According to its blog:

“GPT-4.1 is significantly better than GPT‑4o at a variety of coding tasks, including ironically solving coding tasks, frontend coding, making fewer extraneous edits, following diff formats reliably, ensuring consistent tool usage, and more.”

GPT-4.1 Mini: Big Leap in Small Model Performance

The GPT-4.1 mini offers notable performance gains. OpenAI stated:

“GPT-4.1 mini is a significant leap in small model performance, even beating GPT-4o in many benchmarks. It matches or exceeds GPT‑4o in intelligence evals while reducing latency by nearly half and reducing cost by 83 per cent.”

GPT-4.1 Nano: Fastest and Most Cost-Efficient Model

GPT-4.1 nano, available only via API, is the most cost-effective and high-speed solution for applications demanding minimal latency. OpenAI praised its efficiency and utility:

GPT-4.1 nano is the “fastest and cheapest model available,” with a compact form factor and a one million-token context window. It scores 80.1% on MMLU, 50.3% on GPQA, and 9.8% on Aider polyglot coding, outperforming GPT-4o mini in several benchmarks.

OpenAI highlighted that GPT-4.1 nano is ideal for operations such as classification and autocompletion.
