Spotify has augmented its DJ feature to accept user requests from voice commands, enabling Premium users to ask for music by voice cues rather than keyboard entry. The upgraded DJ will customize playlists from every listener’s history, blending known tunes with new music suggestions based on mood, genre, and context.

As reported by Spotify, the DJ can now answer voice requests, providing Premium listeners in more than 60 markets with an interactive, live means of tailoring their music experience. To illustrate, customers can ask to hear “some happy music for cleaning the house” or “sad songs on a rainy day,” and the playlist will tailor itself accordingly.
The feature can process a variety of prompts, including those related to genre, mood, artist, or activity. Example voice requests include:
- “Surprise me with some indie tracks I’ve never heard before.”
- “Give me some electronic beats for morning exercise.”
Enhanced Music Personalization with Spotify DJ
Spotify describes the aim as making playlist personalization easier by doing away with the need to scroll through innumerable possibilities. The DJ feature employs a mix of artificial intelligence and contribution from Spotify’s worldwide team of music editors to discover new songs, bring back old favorites, and enhance user interaction with music.
The AI DJ also has a human voice modeled after Spotify’s Head of Cultural Partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan. According to Spotify, users have reacted well to his conversational voice. The interaction is two-way, which is an improvement over Spotify’s personalization efforts. It should be mentioned, though, that the DJ is still in beta and does not yet support requests for audiobooks or podcasts.

How to Use Voice Commands with Spotify DJ
To get started with the voice-enabled Spotify DJ feature:
- Open the Search panel in the Spotify app and search for “DJ.”
- Press Play to listen to a carefully selected mix created based on your tastes.
- To issue a voice request, hold and press the DJ button in the bottom right-hand corner. A beep will confirm the DJ is active.
- Say your request — for instance, a type of song, mood, or activity.
- Spotify DJ will refresh the session according to your voice command, listening history, and music preferences.
- To request something new or alter the mood, press and hold the DJ button again.
- To get a fresh playlist segment without a voice command, simply tap the DJ button once to skip ahead.
