8 Epic Motorcycle Journeys Across India

Few countries in the world boast of such geographical diversity as India. And if you’re a motorhead who confines their bikes only to nearby destinations, you really are doing yourself a big disservice. Scattered across India are some supremely blissful biking routes that you can plan your next vacation – or even your next long weekend – around. Let’s take a look at them.

    Mumbai to Goa

    Distance: ~590 km

    Goa

This is among the most popular routes for Mumbai-based bikers. One can leave at 6 am and be sipping on a cocktail by the beach at 5 pm. The route is pretty straightforward and hardly has any bad patches. The Mumbai-Bangalore highway might not have much green cover, but its uninterrupted nature makes it a delight to ride on. And once you enter the Konkan region, there’s lush greenery everywhere, making for a nice change of scenery. Upon reaching Goa, you can also ride from North Goa to South Goa, which is a short yet beautiful route to ride on.

    Manali to Leh

    Distance: ~480 km

    Leh

Now, this is one route that needs no introduction. When bikers first started taking it, it wasn’t exactly a heavenly ride. But the rough roads have now been replaced with sprawling tarmac that lets you soak in the natural beauty of the Himalayas with utmost comfort. If you’re short on time, you can take the conventional route, which takes you through Keylong and Sarchu. But there’s a slightly longer alternative that veers off from Jispa and takes you to the relatively less visited Tso Moriri Lake. However, note that this route has fewer amenities than the conventional one.|

    Siliguri to Lachen/Lachung

    Distance: ~185 km

    Lachen

This is a particularly small route if you start from Siliguri. The ride from Siliguri to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, is lined with lush green forests that keep the temperatures down to cheerfully pleasant levels. And not to forget, you are never too far away from the charming Teesta River, with its gushing white waters. But Gangtok is not where true adventurers stop. The ride begins when you start riding Northward towards the pristine and picturesque landscapes of Lachen and Lachung in the Eastern Himalayas. Snow-capped mountains are always within view, and the vistas are dotted with tiny villages eager to please you with their homestay facilities.

    Ahmedabad to Kutch

    Distance: ~400 km

    Kutch

The cultural richness of Gujarat is unmatched, and you’ll experience it in droves as you ride along NH-947. If you’re even more ambitious, you can start this route from Mumbai and soak in the serene beauty of Anand and the unique food of Surat on the way. And did I mention that Gujarat’s road infrastructure is great as well? Despite all this, it’s the destination that will most amaze you. Unending views of the Rann of Kutch are second to none. Just make sure to visit between November and February, when the Rann Utsav offers you a taste of the region’s rich heritage. As far as detours go, you can reserve a day to stay at Dholavira, another white desert that’s also home to an archaeological site from the Indus Valley civilization.

    Kochi to Kovalam

    Distance: ~220 km

    Kochi

This short ride along the Kerala coastline takes you through unique landscapes and lush coconut groves. You can explore the rich colonial history, vibrant port life, and picturesque backwaters of Kochi before heading South to Alleppey, known as the ‘Venice of the East’ for its extensive network of backwaters and green paddy fields. A detour into the backwaters is a must for those seeking a peaceful escape amid traditional houseboats and coconut groves. Continuing the journey, Varkala will greet you with dramatic sea-facing cliffs and a bohemian vibe. The final stretch leads to Kovalam, a beach town renowned for its crescent-shaped shoreline and vibrant lighthouse beach, where one can relax by the sea or explore local handicraft shops.

    Bengaluru to Ooty

    Distance: ~270 km

    Ooty

This one’s truly an exhilarating journey that lets you escape the bustling cityscape of Bengaluru to the serene hills of the Nilgiris. The ride is punctuated with scenic hill stations and lush forests. You will even pass through Mysore, known for its royal history, and the Bandipur National Park, known for its abundant wildlife. And who knows, you might even spot an elephant or a deer along the way. As you approach Ooty, the landscape transforms into rolling tea gardens, eucalyptus groves, and mist-covered valleys. This is where you can explore botanical gardens, scenic viewpoints, and serene lakes before heading back.

    Shimla to Spiti Valley

    Distance: ~420 km

    Spiti-Valley

Shimla to Spiti Valley is a rugged and thrilling journey that’s ideal for adventure enthusiasts. Riding through the Kinnaur Valley, it’s hard not to stop for photographs every kilometre. Don’t forget to stop at the Nako Lake, the Tabo Monastery, and Kaza during your ride. But the main highlight of this route is definitely the Kunzum Pass, which lies at 4,551 metres and is home to the world’s highest post office. This route offers a blend of breathtaking landscapes, spiritual heritage, and high-altitude adventure, making it one of the most unforgettable motorcycle journeys in India.

    Chennai to Puducherry

    Distance: ~160 km

    Puducherry

We end this list with an East Coast Ride that is worth every kilometre you’ve ever ridden. It’s a scenic and relaxed coastal journey filled with beautiful sea views and a smooth, well-maintained road. There’s much to experience in Puducherry, which is known for its unique blend of French and Tamil culture. If you’re from the West Coast, catching the sunrise along the ocean’s horizon at Promenade Beach is an unexpectedly surreal sight to the eyes of someone who has only seen the sun set into the ocean all their life.
