Elon Musk’s AI venture, xAI, is gearing up to bring its homegrown chatbot, Grok, to Android users as a standalone app. On Tuesday, the app made its first appearance on Google Play, signalling an imminent launch. While the app isn’t available for download just yet, eager users can pre-register to get automatic access once it officially rolls out.

Interestingly, a beta version was briefly released to a select group of users for testing, offering a sneak peek into what’s to come. However, xAI has remained tight-lipped about an official launch date.

    Grok Expands Beyond iOS

Following the iOS launch of Grok just a month ago, xAI now appears to be ramping up efforts to bring its AI chatbot to Android. During its short-lived beta phase, the Grok Android app was accessible to only the first 1,000 users in select regions, including Australia, Canada, India, the Philippines, and Saudi Arabia. While the limited release was intended for testing, the app’s Play Store listing now displays a “Coming Soon” tag, along with an option to pre-register and enable auto-download upon launch.

What to Expect from Grok’s Android App

According to its Play Store description, Grok’s app will be free to use, and users won’t need to sign in to access its core features. However, those looking for a more personalised experience, such as integrating Grok with their X account, will have the option to log in. This differs from Grok’s web version, which requires sign-in for access.

Feature-wise, Grok’s standalone Android app will bring a mix of AI-driven capabilities, including text-based responses, image generation, and real-time information retrieval from X. However, it’s still unclear if web-based search queries will be supported.

Under the hood, the app runs on the Grok 2 AI model, the same powerful large language model that fuels both free and premium versions of the chatbot on the web. While the iOS app allows users to sign in via Apple accounts, xAI has yet to confirm whether the Android version will offer a similar option with Google accounts. With Grok now expanding its reach, Android users won’t have to wait much longer before they can get their hands on xAI’s latest AI chatbot. Stay tuned for an official rollout date.
