Google Meet to Wipe Out Duo Calls Forever by September 2025

Big changes are coming to Google Meet and if you’ve ever used Google Duo, this update is one you can’t ignore.

Google will completely strip out all traces of its old Duo calling service from the Meet app by September 2025. Even though the Google Duo brand was officially terminated in 2022, some of its capabilities have quietly lived on under the “Legacy calls” category in Google Meet. Now, Google is preparing to fully consolidate its video calling experience under the Meet platform.

     What’s Changing?

As reported by 9to5Google, Meet app users are receiving notifications explaining that legacy Duo tech still powers some functions, but the default experience has shifted to “Meet calls.”

The new Google Meet environment brings:

    • In-call chat
    • Live captions
    • Screen sharing
    • Stackable visual effects
    • Add-ons
    • Enhanced interfaces for tablets and foldables

Premium features like hand-raising and advanced tools are available based on your Workspace or Google One subscription.

Duo Features Not Making the Cut

Unfortunately, some fan-favorite Duo features won’t be transferred to Google Meet:

    • Family Mode
    • Mirror Mode
    • Knock Knock
    • Sending emojis from the pre-call screen

Important: Smart displays like the Nest Hub Max and other Nest devices currently only support legacy Duo calls and they won’t get the Meet update.

How to Backup Your Data Before It’s Gone Forever

Google is urging users to export their Duo data before the September 2025 cutoff. That includes video messages and call history, which won’t be accessible after the transition.

    To Export Video Messages:

    1. Go to Settings
    2. Tap on Message settings
    3. Tap on Export messages
    4. A “Meet” folder will be created on your device

To Export Legacy Duo Call History:

    1. Go to Settings
    2. Tap on Calling settings (Legacy)
    3. Tap on Legacy calling account
    4. Tap on Manage Legacy calling history
    5. Select Export legacy call history
    6. A CSV file will be generated for download

Don’t Wait — Migrate Your Data Before It’s Too Late!

With Google Duo features set to vanish and a new era of Google Meet taking center stage, users are encouraged to act now to preserve important memories and call records.
