Canon Launched Two New Ultra-Wide-Angle L-Series RF Mount Lenses for EOS R System Cameras

Canon has introduced two innovative ultra-wide-angle L-series RF mount lenses designed for its EOS R system cameras. The RF7-14mm f/2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM, which claims the title of the world’s first lens with a circular 190° angle of view, marks Canon’s first native RF mount fisheye zoom lens. This new lens is designed to be faster and lighter than its popular EF mount predecessor while supporting 2D VR image creation, expanding the creative possibilities for fisheye photography.

Accompanying the fisheye lens is the RF14mm f/1.4L VCM, Canon’s widest and fastest non-fisheye professional ultra-wide-angle prime lens to date. Part of the f/1.4L VCM series, this lens weighs approximately 578 grams, making it the lightest autofocus-enabled lens in its category.

    RF7-14mm f/2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM

The RF7-14mm f/2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM offers an expansive 7mm wide end when used with a full-frame camera, providing 10° more coverage than the EF8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM. This allows for the creation of a unique “glass ball” circular fisheye effect, ideal for capturing expansive architecture and crowded venues. The lens’s bright f/2.8 to f/3.5 aperture enhances bokeh and low-light performance, achieving results beyond those of existing autofocus fisheye zoom lenses.

Canon has improved the optical design to facilitate better aberration correction and reduce color bleeding, yielding superior image quality compared to the EF version, all while being about 12% lighter at approximately 476 grams. The 190° angle of view supports various imaging techniques, including the conversion of 7mm circular fisheye images. Using Canon’s EOS VR Utility software, users can also produce high-quality hemispherical panorama (2D 180° VR) images viewable on PCs or head-mounted displays.

The RF7-14mm lens comes bundled with a Drop-in Clear Filter and is compatible with the Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. Users can additionally purchase various Drop-in filters separately.

    RF14mm f/1.4L VCM

The RF14mm f/1.4L VCM lens combines a 14mm perspective with a fast f/1.4 aperture, allowing photographers to capture wide landscapes, such as the Milky Way, even in low light conditions. It is approximately 10% lighter than the EF14mm f/2.8L II USM, offering a wider aperture that permits four times more light to pass through. This lightweight design caters to photographers prioritizing both portability and performance.

In addition to its compact structure, the lens features a video-friendly VCM motor and an iris ring for smooth aperture control during video recording. Its optical design minimizes focus breathing, and it includes specially designed elements to ensure high optical quality. These features include three glass molded aspheric lenses to reduce sagittal coma flare, along with fluorite and BR optical elements to lower color bleeding in large aperture ultra-wide-angle lenses. A rear filter holder for sheet-type filters is also available.

Both the RF14mm f/1.4L VCM and the RF7-14mm f/2.8-3.5L Fisheye STM are constructed for durability and reliability, featuring dust- and drip-resistant designs. Additionally, they include a smudge-resistant fluorine coating on the front lens and optics with special coatings aimed at reducing flare and ghosting.
