Google Docs has started rolling out a new AI-powered feature that allows users to listen to short audio summaries of their documents. The feature is powered by Gemini and is designed to help users quickly understand key points without reading the entire file.
The update builds on the existing Text-to-Speech tool introduced in August 2025. While Text-to-Speech reads the full content aloud, the new feature creates a brief spoken summary of the document.
What Is the Audio Summary Feature?
The Gemini-powered audio summary provides a short verbal overview of a document’s content. Instead of scrolling through long reports or detailed meeting notes, users can listen to a concise recap that highlights the most important points.
According to Google, these summaries are usually under a few minutes long. The company says the feature uses natural-sounding voices to make the listening experience smoother and more engaging.
The summary can include content from multiple tabs within the same document, making it useful for larger projects.
Voice Styles and Playback Controls
Google Docs also allows users to personalise their listening experience. The feature offers multiple voice styles, including:
- Narrator
- Persuader
- Coach
Users can also adjust playback speed from 0.5x to 2x, depending on their preference. This flexibility makes it easier to listen quickly or slow things down for better understanding.
How to Use Gemini Audio Summaries in Google Docs
On the web version of Google Docs, the feature can be accessed through the Tools menu.
Here’s how it works:
- Open your document in Google Docs (web version).
- Click on Tools in the top menu.
- Select Listen to document summary.
Once selected, an audio player opens with playback controls, a timeline scrubber, and options to change the voice style. The existing “Listen to this tab” option remains available for full document reading.
Why This Feature Is Useful
The audio summary feature is designed for productivity and convenience. Users can:
- Catch up on meeting notes before a discussion
- Listen to highlights from long reports
- Review their writing while multitasking
- Improve comprehension and spot potential errors
For professionals and students working with lengthy documents, this feature can save time and improve workflow.
Who Can Access the Feature?
Google said the rollout will take place over the coming weeks. The feature will be available to the following subscribers:
- Business Standard and Plus
- Enterprise Standard and Plus
- Google AI Ultra for Business add-on
- Google AI Pro for Education add-on
- Google AI Pro and Ultra
As Google continues to expand Gemini integration across its products, the addition of audio summaries in Google Docs marks another step toward AI-assisted productivity tools within Workspace.
