OpenAI is rolling out parental controls for ChatGPT following a heartbreaking incident involving a teenager. The new tools allow parents to connect their accounts with their child’s account, giving families more control over safety and online interactions.
“Introducing parental controls in ChatGPT. Now parents and teens can link accounts to automatically get stronger safeguards for teens. Parents also gain tools to adjust features and set limits that work for their family,” OpenAI said in a post on X.
What Led to This Update
The update comes after a California family filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. Matt and Maria Raine said that their 16-year-old son, Adam, who tragically took his own life, shared suicidal thoughts with ChatGPT, and that the AI failed to intervene. The couple submitted chat logs as evidence, saying the AI “approved his dangerous and self-harming thoughts,” according to reports.
This incident highlighted the urgent need for stronger safety measures for teens using AI chatbots.
How the Parental Controls Work
Parents and teens can now connect accounts through an invitation system. Once the invitation is accepted, the connection is established. Parents cannot see all conversations only in rare cases where the system detects a serious safety risk. In those situations, trained reviewers alert parents, providing only the information necessary to protect the teen.

These features were created in consultation with child safety experts, advocacy groups, and policymakers, and OpenAI plans to improve them further over time.
Why It Matters
AI is becoming a part of everyday life, and while it can be a powerful tool for learning and creativity, teen safety online cannot be overlooked. OpenAI’s parental controls give families the tools to balance freedom and protection, ensuring teens can explore AI responsibly.
