Tata Motors has partnered with Tata Communications to bring in-built 5G connectivity to the newly launched Sierra EV, marking a step towards the company’s broader adoption of Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) technology in India. The collaboration integrates Tata Communications’ MOVE Connected Vehicle Platform with Tata Motors’ new N.IO SDV platform.

The integration is designed to provide the Sierra EV with continuous cellular connectivity and enable a range of connected services. According to the companies, these include faster over-the-air software updates, secure in-car connectivity for content streaming, and a simplified onboarding process. Customers will also have the option to purchase additional subscription packs through the connected platform.

Connectivity will also extend to safety and vehicle support functions. The system will support emergency calls, remote assistance and real-time remote vehicle diagnostics. Tata Communications says the underlying platform is intended to provide a scalable foundation for future connected-car capabilities, including AI-enabled applications.

The companies say the collaboration is aimed at moving the Sierra.ev towards a continuously connected digital experience, with software playing a greater role throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle. Alongside infotainment and personalisation, the platform could support fleet-efficiency applications and create additional avenues for revenue through digital services and subscriptions.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles CTO Sven Patuschka said that connectivity and digital services will become increasingly important as vehicles become more software-defined. He described the Sierra EV as an important step in this evolution, with Tata Communications providing the digital backbone for continuous updates and connected services.

The move reflects the increasing convergence of automotive hardware, software and telecommunications, with the Sierra.ev positioned as a vehicle capable of gaining new functions and services through its connected architecture.
