Over the years, the list of Olympic athletes from India has increased slowly and steadily. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, 124 athletes represented India, the largest number since its inception. India overall also won 7 medals, including Neeraj Chopra’s legendary gold achievement in the men’s javelin throw. So, at the Paris 2024 Olympics, we can expect more athletes to represent and witness more greatness.
Who are the athletes to watch out for?
PV Sindhu – Badminton for women’s singles
The legendary two-time champion Pusarla Venkata Sindhu has ranked and is set to represent India in Badminton for women’s singles. The badminton player has previously won the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She suffered an injury but recovered and made a comeback in February. Now, we can only watch and see her glory in Paris 2024.
Neeraj Chopra – Men’s javelin throw
As mentioned with his previous accolade, Neeraj Chopra has high expectations set on him after his iconic gold medal win. As an athlete in the javelin throw category, he is also the first Asian to win gold in his event at the World Championship. Despite initially being an underdog, he is now in the spotlight and should be on your radar.
Manu Bhaker – Women’s 25m pistol
Manu Bhaker, a young shooting sensation, will compete in multiple events, including the 25m air pistol. Her consistent performances in international competitions make her a medal hopeful for India. At the Asian Games, she won the team gold for India, and she was just 16 years old when she won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She is a superstar to root for.
Priyanka Goswami – Women’s 20km race walk
Priyanka Goswami is a prominent figure in race walking and was among the first Indian athletes to qualify for Paris 2024. She is the first Indian woman in her field to win silver in the 10,000m walk at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Her performances have been steadily improving, and she is expected to make a significant impact in 2024, so watch out for her!
Avinash Sable – Men’s 3000m steeplechase
Avinash Sable has been a consistent performer in the 3000m steeplechase. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, he recorded the national record at 8:11.20, which was his ninth time setting this record. He qualified for Paris 2024, and if his nine-time record-breaking shows anything, it shows you should be watching out for him.
Murali Sreeshankar – Men’s long jump
Despite injury setbacks, Murali Sreeshankar is a key long jump athlete. He secured his place for Paris 2024 by exceeding the qualifying standard with an impressive jump of 8.37m at the Asian Athletics Championships. Another national record-setter was added to the list!
Mirabai Chanu Saikhom – Weightlifting
Mirabai Chanu Saikhom won silver in the women’s 49kg weight class at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and will make a glorious comeback this year. After several ups and downs, it will be a sight to see how she fares at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Hilariously, her win in 2020 secured her a lifetime of pizza from Domino’s. Maybe she will be rewarded with more strange things this time.
