Indisciplined Leader: Vijay Shekhar Sharma – The ₹5,000 Crore Paytm Rollercoaster

There are very few Indian startup stories where the founder has seen his company go from a ₹2,150 IPO to a stock-market disaster and then back into serious investor territory. Vijay Shekhar Sharma’s Paytm story is one of those. It is also a reminder that in the stock market, yesterday’s billionaire can become tomorrow’s headline before breakfast.

Sharma started Paytm in 2010, building it around something that sounded almost boring at the time – mobile recharges. Then came wallets, QR codes, payments, financial services and eventually one of India’s biggest fintech businesses. When Paytm went public in November 2021, its IPO was priced at ₹2,150 a share and the company was valued at roughly $19 billion, making it one of India’s biggest public listings. For a founder who had spent years betting on digital payments when cash was still king, this looked like the payoff.

Then the market did what markets do best: it stopped being impressed.

Paytm’s share price collapsed dramatically after the listing, wiping out billions of dollars in market value. Then came the bigger blow in 2024, when the Reserve Bank of India took action against Paytm Payments Bank over regulatory compliance concerns. The RBI directed the bank to stop accepting further deposits and credit transactions after March 15, 2024. Sharma subsequently stepped down from the board of Paytm Payments Bank.

But here is where the Paytm story gets interesting. Sharma was not simply building the company with somebody else’s money while watching from the sidelines. He had put his own money into the business. In 2016, he revealed that he had personally invested ₹112 crore in Paytm Payments Bank. Earlier, he had also pledged his own shares to help fund the business. That is a very different kind of founder conviction. When the company wins, you win. When it falls, you feel the fall personally.

And then comes the ₹5,000-crore headline.

In August 2026, Sharma’s Resilient Asset Management announced plans to sell up to 4.98% of Paytm, worth close to ₹5,000 crore at the proposed floor price. It instantly brought the Paytm story full circle. The company that once commanded a valuation of around $19 billion had travelled through a spectacular boom, a brutal collapse and a long rebuilding phase.

But there is an important distinction. The ₹5,000 crore should not simply be described as Sharma personally cashing out ₹5,000 crore. The shares are held through Resilient Asset Management, and the economic ownership structure has its own history involving Antfin. In other words, the headline is big, but the fine print matters.

That is what makes Vijay Shekhar Sharma an Indisciplined Leader. He built early, bet aggressively, put his own capital at risk and survived one of the most painful episodes in India’s fintech history. Paytm’s journey is not a straight line to success. It is a chart full of spikes, crashes, recoveries and uncomfortable lessons.

    The Indisciplined Playbook

    • Bet before everyone else: Paytm started with mobile recharges and rode the massive shift towards digital payments.
    • Have skin in the game: Sharma put significant personal capital into the business and pledged shares when the company needed funding.
    • Don’t fall in love with valuation: A ₹2,150 IPO price is a number, not a permanent reality. Markets can change their minds very quickly.
    • Survive the crash: The real test of an entrepreneur isn’t the IPO day when everyone is celebrating. It is the morning after the valuation has been cut to pieces.
    • Know the difference between paper wealth and real money: A ₹5,000-crore stake sale headline sounds enormous, but ownership structures, economics and taxes can make the actual picture very different.

    The Key Takeaway

Vijay Shekhar Sharma’s Paytm journey proves that entrepreneurship is rarely a clean upward graph. You can build a company worth billions, watch billions disappear, put your own money on the line and still come back to the table. The lesson isn’t to take every risk. It is to understand which risks you are willing to survive.

Because sometimes the most important part of building a billion-dollar company is surviving the billion-dollar mistake.
