The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed the first phase of astronaut training for its ambitious Gaganyaan mission, India’s first human spaceflight initiative. In collaboration with NASA, this significant milestone was officially announced by ISRO, confirming that Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the mission’s primary crew member, and Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, the backup crew member, have wrapped up their initial training in the United States. The Gaganyaan mission is set to launch in late 2026, marking a historic moment in India’s space journey.

    Training Highlights and Key Milestones

The foundational training began in August and focused on equipping the astronauts with the knowledge and skills required for the mission. Through a post on X (formerly Twitter), ISRO shared insights into the rigorous program. The training encompassed comprehensive tours of mission-related ground facilities, briefings on launch protocols, SpaceX suit fittings, and trials of space-grade food. The astronauts were also introduced to the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft and the systems onboard the International Space Station (ISS).

One of the critical aspects of this phase was simulation-based training for handling potential emergencies in space. As per ISRO’s updates, the crew underwent intensive medical emergency drills and practised operational protocols crucial for the mission’s success. Additionally, they were trained in day-to-day operational routines and mastered communication protocols essential for seamless coordination during the mission.

Advancing to the Next Training Phase

The astronauts will now progress to advanced training with the initial phase completed. This next stage will include hands-on modules focused on the U.S. Orbital Segment of the ISS and conducting scientific experiments in microgravity. Furthermore, operational drills aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft will take centre stage in this phase.

The Gaganyaan mission symbolises India’s leap forward in human space exploration. Backed by the joint efforts of ISRO and NASA, the program underscores India’s growing contribution to the global space community. As preparations intensify, the astronauts’ rigorous training lays a robust foundation for this pioneering mission, ensuring its success.
