A fresh set of UPI rules has officially come into effect from August 1, 2025, following new directives issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). These changes aim to streamline UPI operations, reduce digital load, and improve security and efficiency in digital transactions.
Whether you’re using PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, or any other UPI app, these changes will impact your daily usage patterns. However, users following the new NPCI guidelines should experience smoother transactions with fewer disruptions.
1. What Is the New Rule of UPI Payment?
- From August 1, UPI users will no longer be able to check bank balances unlimited times. The NPCI has capped bank balance inquiries to 50 times per day.
- To offset this restriction, your bank balance will now automatically display after every transaction on apps like Google Pay and PhonePe.
- Additionally, pending UPI transactions can only be checked 3 times, and each attempt must be spaced by 90 seconds.
- Scheduled bill payments (via UPI Autopay) will only be processed during off-peak hours:
- Before 10:00 AM
- After 9:30 PM
2. What Is the New Google Pay Transaction Rule?
If you use Google Pay, the following rules now apply:
- Bank balance checks are limited to 50 daily.
- Balance visibility after each transaction is automatic.
- Pending transaction status can only be checked three times at 90-second intervals.
- All Google Pay UPI transactions must comply with the new NPCI framework.
3. How Many UPI Payments Can Be Made Per Day?
As of August 1, NPCI has not changed the maximum UPI transaction limit per day:
- Maximum transactions/day: 20
- Daily transaction value cap: ₹1 lakh
These limits remain the same under the latest guidelines.
4. What Is the UPI Transfer Limit for New Users?
If you’re a first-time UPI user, banks may apply a temporary limit:
- Single UPI transfer limit: ₹5,000
- Total limit for first 24 hours: ₹5,000
This is a precautionary measure and is lifted after the initial 24-hour period depending on the bank.

5. How Does the New UPI Autopay Rule Work?
NPCI’s revised guidelines for UPI Autopay are now in force:
- Auto-debit transactions (e.g., OTT subscriptions, utility bills) will only be processed during off-peak hours.
- This means your recurring payments will occur before 10 AM or after 9:30 PM.
- The change helps reduce congestion and improve reliability during peak transaction hours.
Final Thoughts
These new UPI rules aim to optimize user experience while balancing server load and enhancing payment security. Whether you’re a frequent UPI user or a new one, staying updated with these changes will help avoid transaction failures and app errors.
