If you love spending Independence Day, you need to read this. As India celebrates August 15th, it’s a time to remember the bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering spirit that brought us freedom. What better way to honour this day than by watching movies that tell our heroes’ stories and our nation’s journey? These films, filled with emotion and pride, will take you back in time and remind you of the incredible journey that shaped the India we know today. So, gather your loved ones and enjoy these heartfelt movies that capture the essence of our independence in the comfort of your home.

    Lagaan (2001)

    Genre: Sport/Musical
    Time: 3 hours 44 minutes

Lagaan is a story of resilience and unity in the Victorian period of the British occupation. The plot centres around a small village burdened by high taxes (Lagaan) imposed by the British. Led by the determined Bhuvan, played by Aamir Khan, the villagers challenge the British officers to a cricket match. Betting that if they win, their taxes will be waived. The film’s epic scale, compelling narrative, and engaging cricket sequences captivated audiences worldwide. Moreover, Lagaan was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, bringing international recognition to Bollywood.

    Chak De! India (2007)

    Genre: Family/Sport

    Time: 2 hours 33 minutes

This powerful story will change your life. Chak De! India is a motivational film with a brilliant storyline, a dramatic soundtrack, and outstanding performances. It is filled with passion and fervour, as depicted by the Indian girl’s team, who work to the bone to qualify finally. They initially get overlooked by the Indian Hockey Association, something not new to them, but Shah Rukh Khan’s character, an ex-hockey player, takes a chance on them. The dynamic between him and the girls’ team is natural, filled with support, and shows how just believing in someone can give fruit to something special.

    Swades (2004)

    Genre: Musical/Drama

    Time: 3 hours 9 minutes

Regarded as Shah Rukh Khan’s best performance, Swades is a moving film that touches upon several intense topics that directors are usually too afraid to tackle. From casteism to social inequality, Ashutosh Gowariker addresses these with sensitivity and diligence. Shah Rukh Khan plays an NRI employed by NASA who returns to India in search of his nanny. His return sets him off on a journey of change and social justice. Swades is a must-watch eye-opener to India’s socio-politics.

    India’s Daughter (2015)

    Genre: Documentary/Crime

    Time: 1 hour 3 minutes

India’s Daughter is a powerful documentary directed by Leslee Udwin. It delves into the horrific gang rape and murder of Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old medical student, in Delhi on December 16, 2012. The film explores the brutal attack that shook the nation and kindled widespread protests. It features interviews with Jyoti’s parents, friends, one of the convicted rapists, as well as legal experts and activists. Through these perspectives, it sheds light on the deep-rooted misogyny and gender inequality in India, exposing the harsh realities faced by women.  Despite its critical acclaim, “India’s Daughter” faced controversy and was banned in India due to concerns about its potential to incite further violence. Nevertheless, it has been widely praised for its unflinching portrayal of a tragedy that sparked a national and global conversation about women’s rights and safety.

    Gandhi (1982)

    Genre: Drama/History

    Time: 3 hours 11 minutes

Gandhi is an epic biographical film directed by Richard Attenborough, starring Ben Kingsley as Mahatma Gandhi. The film chronicles Gandhi’s life and his nonviolent struggle for India’s independence from British rule. It highlights key events and his pivotal role in the Indian independence movement. The movie showcases Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence and civil disobedience, portraying his enduring impact on the world. With powerful performances and a compelling narrative, Gandhi won numerous awards, including eight Academy Awards, and remains a landmark film celebrating the life and legacy of one of history’s greatest leaders.
