Are Ghibli-Style AI Image Generators Safe?

Ghibli-style AI image generators are the latest viral trend, allowing users to transform their personal photos into stunning artwork inspired by legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki. OpenAI recently introduced this feature in ChatGPT, while Elon Musk’s Grok 3 also offers free Ghibli-style AI image generation. However, while these tools create visually striking portraits, they also raise significant privacy concerns.

Privacy Risks: Are You Sharing Personal Data with AI?

As millions of users rush to generate Ghibli-style AI images, digital privacy activists warn that OpenAI may be using this trend to collect vast amounts of personal data. Critics argue that by voluntarily uploading their images, users may unknowingly grant OpenAI access to facial data, which could be used for AI training.

Luiza Jarovsky, co-founder of the AI, Tech & Privacy Academy, highlighted that under GDPR regulations, OpenAI must justify collecting images from the internet under the “legitimate interest” legal basis. However, when users voluntarily upload photos, OpenAI can process them under Article 6.1.a of the GDPR, which bypasses the need for a “legitimate interest” test. This legal loophole gives OpenAI greater freedom in handling user images.

OpenAI’s Privacy Policy: What You Need to Know

OpenAI has not yet issued a statement regarding personal data security for the Ghibli-style AI generator. However, when asked about the safety of uploading personal photos, ChatGPT responded:

“No, it’s not safe to upload personal photos to any AI tool unless you’re certain about its privacy policies and data handling practices. OpenAI does not retain or use uploaded images beyond the immediate session, but it’s always best to avoid sharing sensitive or personal images with AI services. If privacy is a concern, consider using offline tools or apps specifically designed for secure image processing.”

While OpenAI claims not to store images beyond the session, privacy experts argue that companies could still gain insights from user data before deletion. Moreover, social networks and other AI firms may only see the “Ghiblified” versions, while OpenAI retains access to the original uploads.

How to Protect Your Privacy Before Using AI Image Generators

Before jumping on the next AI image trend, consider these steps to keep your biometric data safe:

    • Avoid Uploading Personal Photos: Think twice before submitting images for AI-generated artwork.
    • Limit High-Resolution Image Sharing: AI companies can harvest high-quality photos for training purposes.
    • Disable Facial Recognition for Devices: Use PINs or passwords instead.
    • Restrict Camera Access for Apps: Review app permissions and revoke unnecessary access.

The Bigger Ethical Issue: AI and Copyrighted Art

Beyond privacy, the Ghibli-style AI trend raises ethical concerns about AI-generated content trained on copyrighted art. Hayao Miyazaki, known for his hand-drawn animation and fantastical storytelling, has been skeptical of AI’s role in animation. Many artists argue that AI tools exploit human creativity without proper compensation or credit, jeopardizing traditional animation and design careers.

Final Thoughts: Should You Use Ghibli-Style AI Generators?

While Ghibli-style AI generators provide a fun and creative experience, they come with privacy risks. If you’re concerned about data security, consider using offline tools or ensuring that the platform you use follows strict privacy policies. Always stay informed about how AI companies handle personal data before participating in viral trends.
