As part of a forthcoming update to the Google Photos app, Google is also rewriting its image editor and adding some AI-based features, such as tools previously reserved for Pixel phones. In an announcement blog post, the company confirmed that features such as Reimagine and Auto Frame will become available on more Android handsets as well as iPhones.

Pixel-Exclusive AI Features Now Coming to More Devices

First launched with the Pixel 9 lineup, Auto Frame employs generative AI to recommend alternative image compositions cropping or expanding shots and filling space as necessary. Reimagine lets people choose sections of a picture and make precise edits with natural language instructions. These features will now be made accessible to a wider audience outside of Pixel owners.

    Google Photos: What’s New?

     Redesigned Editor

The editing UI in Google Photos is being redesigned to provide simplified access to tools and AI-based suggestions for instant edits.

    QR Code Album Sharing

Users can now generate a QR code to share albums more easily. Anyone with the code will be able to view and contribute to the album.

    Travel History

A new “Places” section under the Collections tab will show photos pinned on a map, making it easier to see where each picture was taken.

    Contextual Search

People can search photos with natural descriptions such as “me wearing a sparkly blue shirt” or “Alice at the beach.”

    Recaps

Google Photos will automatically collect and showcase great moments with “Best of Month” and “Year-End Recap” albums, which can also be shared.

     Video Montage

Users will be able to choose pictures and videos to make brief highlight clips. Google will automatically use AI to merge the material into a video with music playing in the background.

Other Features Coming to Google Photos:

    • Automatic stacking of similar photos
    • The option to hide images of particular individuals
    • A “Free up space on this device” option to erase files already stored in the cloud

These new Google Photos features will roll out next month to Android devices worldwide, followed by iOS later this year.
