Instagram has officially rolled out its Map feature in India, offering users a new way to explore posts, reels, and stories while staying connected with friends. This interactive feature allows users to share their recent location selectively, discover trending spots, and explore content from creators near them all while maintaining privacy control.
What is the Instagram Map Feature?
The Instagram Map is an interactive tool that enables users to:
- Explore location-tagged posts, reels, and stories from friends and creators.
- Discover nearby cafes, restaurants, and popular local spots.
- Follow travel updates and recommendations shared by friends.
According to Instagram, “No matter how you use the map, you and your friends have a new, lightweight way to connect with each other.”
How Does the Instagram Map Work?
Once activated, the Map displays posts and stories based on location tags. Users can choose to share their current or past location with selected friends. For added transparency, Instagram shows a persistent location indicator at the top of the Map, signaling whether location services are active or disabled. Users also get reminders in the Notes tray on their profile picture if location sharing is turned off.

Location Tagging vs Live Location Sharing
Instagram has clarified the difference between tagging a location and live location sharing:
- Tagged posts do not share your real-time location.
- Profile pictures of users are hidden from tagged posts in the Map view.
- Users receive a preview of location tags when adding them to posts, reels, or stories.
This update helps prevent confusion and gives users more control over their location privacy.
Instagram Map Location Privacy Settings
Users can manage their Map settings anytime, including:
- Turning location sharing on or off
- Choosing who can view their location (restricted to mutual followers for privacy)
- Updating location every time they open Instagram; inactive locations disappear after 24 hours
Location-sharing status is represented with three icons:
- Blue arrow: Location sharing is active
- Red dot: Location sharing is disabled
- Orange triangle: Location permissions need to be enabled
