Amazon Echo Show 8 (2026) Review: A Smart Display That Can Run Your Day

That the Echo Show 8 (2026) is Amazon’s most advanced mid-size smart display yet is quite obvious, given it’s the fourth-gen model of the concept. The update isn’t just cosmetic, as the company has redesigned the hardware, added new sensors, improved audio architecture, and introduced contextual automation through a platform called Omnisense. With an 8.7-inch edge-to-edge display, spatial audio speakers, and a new AZ3 Pro processor, the device aims to function as a true ambient home assistant rather than just a voice speaker with a screen. After spending a few weeks with it, here are my thoughts on it.

Design

The most obvious change in the 2026 Echo Show 8 is the new edge-to-edge glass display with much slimmer bezels. Compared to previous versions, the device looks more modern and premium while keeping the familiar fabric-covered speaker base. The display is now 8.7 inches long, which makes it slightly larger than earlier generations, and the thinner borders give it a much more tablet-like aesthetic without making the device physically bigger.

Amazon has also refined the materials. The speaker housing uses a 3D-knit fabric finish, which helps the device blend naturally into kitchens, bedrooms, or living rooms rather than looking like typical consumer electronics. The design is clearly intended for countertop placement. The screen tilts slightly upward and has excellent viewing angles, so it’s visible whether you’re standing in the kitchen or sitting across the room.

Physical controls remain minimal but practical. You get volume buttons, a mute button, and a power port at the rear. The 13MP camera sits centred above the display and supports auto-framing for video calls. The aforementioned mute button, when activated, turns off not just the microphones but also the camera shutter. Overall, the design feels more polished than previous Echo Show devices while still maintaining the understated look Amazon’s smart displays are known for.

Functionality

The Echo Show 8 is built around Amazon Alexa, but the 2026 version pushes the concept further by using sensors and contextual awareness. The device uses Omnisense, a system that combines motion, presence, and temperature sensors to trigger routines automatically. This means the device can start behaving proactively rather than waiting for commands. Placed in the kitchen or living room, the Echo Show 8 becomes a family dashboard. It can show calendar events, weather updates, news briefings, reminders, etc. Moreover, it can also function as a smart home hub, letting you control your smart lights and other smart devices using your voice or via its touchscreen.

One of the biggest use cases of the product is turning it into your kitchen assistant. It can be used for watching recipe videos while cooking, conversing with Alexa to solve your culinary doubts, or even doing something as simple as playing songs without touching your phone. And then comes the camera, which makes it ideal for video calls as well. The catch, however, is that you can only place calls to those who have the Alexa app installed on their phones or those with their own Echo Show devices.

Additionally, the device’s screen also doubles up as a casual media screen. This allows you to quickly stream music, podcasts, and even Prime Video and Netflix content, for that matter. While it doesn’t replace the TV by any means, it’s good for background entertainment while cooking or working.

Performance

The Echo Show 8 (2026) is powered by Amazon’s AZ3 Pro processor, which noticeably improves responsiveness compared with older Echo devices. Voice commands are processed quickly, and the device wakes almost instantly when you say “Alexa.” Alexa remains one of the most reliable voice assistants. The microphones can easily pick up commands from across a room, even when music is playing. While the touchscreen interface is smooth and workable enough, it’s not tablet-level fluid.

Amazon has redesigned the speaker system with front-firing drivers and a custom woofer, delivering deeper bass and clearer vocals. I must say, the audio quality of this speaker is really good. Spatial audio support helps music fill a room more naturally, making it one of the best-sounding smart displays in Amazon’s lineup. Coming to the new context awareness features, these allow the device to wake when someone enters the room, adjust content depending on proximity, and trigger routines automatically. They are a rather good addition to the extensive feature set of the Echo Show 8.
