Mumbai’s art and cinema lovers have a rare opportunity this month as renowned photographer and film producer Atul Kasbekar unveils HONEST: Portraits of Character, a striking photography exhibition that celebrates some of Indian cinema’s finest character actors. Hosted at Jio World Plaza in BKC, the exhibition runs until July 5 and is open to the public free of charge.
Featuring 56 large-format black-and-white portraits, the collection shines a spotlight on performers whose talent has often eclipsed celebrity. The exhibition includes powerful portraits of actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher, Pankaj Tripathi, Boman Irani, Arshad Warsi, Kay Kay Menon, Ratna Pathak Shah and Rasika Dugal.
What makes the exhibition unique is its commitment to authenticity. None of the portraits have been retouched, allowing every wrinkle, expression and nuance to remain intact. Kasbekar describes the project as a celebration of honesty—both in performance and in portraiture.

To ensure that authenticity translated seamlessly from camera to gallery wall, global imaging giant Epson partnered as the official print sponsor. The photographs were produced using Epson’s SureColor large-format printers, archival-grade UltraChrome PRO12 pigment inks and professional media, resulting in exceptionally detailed monochrome prints with remarkable tonal depth.
“The prints are the exhibition,” said Kasbekar, emphasising the importance of preserving subtle black-and-white gradations. Epson India echoed the sentiment, noting that photographic storytelling reaches its fullest expression when images are transformed into enduring physical prints.
Spread across Levels 1 and 2 of Jio World Plaza, HONEST: Portraits of Character offers visitors a chance to experience Indian cinema through the faces that have quietly shaped it for decades—one portrait at a time.
