Top 5 Travelogues by Ancient Travellers who visited India

Every travel voyage has a tale to tell. When it comes to India, the country has always been the favourite destination for explorers due to its traditions, hospitality, and colours. Being a country that believes in the rituals like “Atithi Devo Bhava”, we’ve always welcomed every traveller to our country. Besides British travellers, who were more into imperialism, the rest of the travellers who visited India were here to seek knowledge and wisdom and to know about the customs and education system of the country. They documented their experiences and spread the word about India to the rest of the world with their travelogues, i.e., first-hand accounts or compilations of visitors’ experiences.

Marco Polo

He was an explorer, merchant and writer from Venice who needs no introduction as he is one of the most celebrated travellers in the history of mankind. He travelled through Asia along the Silk Road between 1271 and 1295. He visited India while he was on his way home from China and explored the country from 1288-1292 AD under the reign of the Pandya Kingdom.

He was one of the first guys who described, ” The country has had a custom of keeping a specific leaf called Tembul (paan) in their mouth most of the time, which they chew and spit out the saliva that it generates.” He also mentioned in his travelogues about how royal people lived in India, “The nobles and great folks wear necklaces made of precious stones around their necks”.

Abdur Razzak Samarqandi

The first attributes of the Vijaynagara empire were described by Abdur Razzak Samarqandi, a Persian traveller who visited India around 1440. He was the ambassador of the Shahrukh, the Timurid dynasty ruler of Persia and was sent to the Kingdom of Kozhikode in the South Malabar region of India. On his Indian voyage, he also visited the Vijaynagar Kingdom at the time of Dev Raya II.

He wrote about his travel experiences in the Matla-us-Sadain was Majma-ul-Bahrain or The Rise of Two Auspicious Constellations and the Confluence of Two Oceans. He also wrote a 45-page travelogue of his mission to India, where he described the life and events in Zamorin of Calicut (Kozhikode). He described the grandeur of the ancient city of Hampi as wealthy and spacious.

Ibn Batuta

Ibn Batuta was and still is a renowned traveller who wrote one of the world’s most famous travelogues, the Riḥlah. He travelled worldwide when travelling wasn’t an easy job to do, and that too without any travel gear. He ventured into over 40 modern-day nations while voyaging via the sea, on camel and foot. He came to India in 1333-1342 AD through the high mountains of Afghanistan during the reign of Mohd Bin Tughlaq.

He was one of the few medieval travellers known to have visited the lands of every Muslim ruler of his time, and, being precise, he journeyed more than 75,000 miles (121,000 km), surpassing the travelling record of his near-contemporary Marco Polo. He described in his travelogue that the Indian cities were full of opportunities for those who had the passion, skills and resources.

Megasthenes

Megasthenes was the first ever foreign traveller to India. He visited India between 302 and 288 BC and served as Seleucus Nicator’s envoy at the court of Chandragupta Maurya. The world got to know about India through Megasthenes and his reputed work ‘Indica,’ in which he mentions Kerala as ‘Cherme’. In his travelogue, the Greek traveller also mentions India’s two major rivers, Sindhu and Ganga.

Hiuen Tsang

You must have heard about Hiuen Tsang, as his voyage through India was part of our history textbooks, making him one of India’s most celebrated travellers. He visited India in 630 AD to learn about Buddhist beliefs and practices and ended up staying on for 15 long years. He was popularly known as the prince of pilgrims as he spent most of his time in India studying the caste system of the country and wrote the book ‘Si-Yu-Ki.’

Hiuen Tsang studied at the University of Nalanda and travelled through the Deccan, Orissa, Bengal, Kashmir, Punjab, Bodh-Gaya, and Sarnath. In his accounts, he described India as a prosperous country. He described Kannauj as a beautiful city and Indians as lovers of education, literature and fine arts. He documented that “the houses were of varied types and constructed with wood, bricks and dung.”

Beautiful Indian villages you must explore in 2022

Every year millions of tourists and travellers visit India, but only to explore the celebrated places of the country. When Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, came back to India from South Africa, he travelled throughout the country to understand the ground-level situation of the villages. Do you know why? He preferred to visit villages instead of cities because he knew the real India lies in its villages.

Even today, after 75 years of independence, a large number of our population prefer to live in rural areas, where the natural beauty of the country rests peacefully. India is amongst the top 10 countries in the world when it comes to the number of World Heritage Sites. Recently, India became the world’s fifth-largest economy by overtaking the United Kingdom, the country that once slaughtered India and treated Indians as enslaved people.

Come on, enough of history, it’s time to take a look at the 10 most beautiful Indian villages!

Kalpa

We’ve many beautiful places to explore in our country, but only a few stay in our hearts. Kalpa – the winter home of lord Shiva, is a scenic town situated in the lap of Himachal Pradesh and is considered one of the best-kept secrets of the state. The stunning town offers mesmerizing views of the Kinnaur Kailash range of the Himalayas, and the climate here is perfect for people looking for a chaos-free vacation.

Mandawa

Naah, we’re not referring to the beautiful beach town of Alibaug here. The place we’re mentioning here is located in the Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan and was once home to wealthy Rajasthani merchants. The town of Mandawa is known as an “open art gallery” due to its beautiful grand havelis. The havelis were built by Shekhawati rulers and consist of exquisite paintings, murals, and various other captivating artefacts.

Khonoma

We all are aware of the natural beauty that lies in the north-east region of India. Khonoma is one such stunning town located on the 20 Km west of Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland. The town is known for the valour and courage of its people in the past. Due to its initiative to conserve flora and fauna of the region, today, the village is called a green village, where hunting and logging in the forests are strictly restricted.

Munsiyari

Wanna experience snowfall on your next vacay,  then Munsiyari, an offbeat hamlet in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, is the perfect place for you. The name ‘Munsiyari’ means a place with snow in the local language. The beautiful town is famous for its eye-catching beauty and trekking spots. The popular hill station is situated at the base of the great Himalayan mountain ranges and offers surreal views of the Kumaon hills.

Kuttanad

The first village on our list is in the god’s own country, Kerala, and is hailed as the rice bowl of Kerala. Kuttanad is a delta region of about 900 sq. km situated on the west coast of Kerala State and is famous for its paddy fields and red water lilies. The area covers Kottayam and Alappuzha districts and bears a solid resemblance to Holland regarding geographical features; that’s why it is also referred to as the Netherlands of Kerala.

Mawlynnong

You might have seen an image of a living roots bridge somewhere on social media and have spent at least a minute thinking about it. Well, that’s not a processed image, Mawlynnong, a town in the state of Meghalaya, actually has it, and it’s about 1000 years old. The town is often referred to as one of the most beautiful towns in India and is called God’s own Garden. The town remains untouched by human interference, making it more exotic.

Hodka

Sometimes the beauty of a place lies in its emptiness, and Hodka, a desert town situated in Gujarat, matches the description of the moment. The place is home to the Meghwals, who are known for their contribution to embroidery and the textile industry. The town has one of the most beautiful traditional houses in the country, and they are constructed in such a way that they stay cool from the inside during summer and warm in winter.

Dha & Hanu

The rumour says, Brokpas, the people who live in Dha, Hanu, Darchicks, and other nearby towns, are the pure Aryans, the actual descendants of the Alexanders army who stayed back in the valley. Amongst all the Brokpa towns, only Dha and Hanu are open to the public as the Brokpas are obsessed with purity. Come here to experience the cultural diversity and don’t forget to bring your cameras as the place is extremely beautiful and the people who live here are very friendly.

Majuli Island

Majuli, nestled amidst the mighty Brahmaputra River, is the world’s largest freshwater island. It’s a must-visit place for every travelling enthusiast because, due to climate change, in the next 20-25 years, the lush green and pollution-free island may completely disappear from the earth’s map. The green fields and the water bodies of Majuli island will stay in your heart for a long time, and you’ll feel blessed for the rest of your life.

Varanga

Villages in the southern region of India are the most picturesque, and Varanga has its charm, thanks to the several Jain temples. The hilly village is surrounded by a backdrop of a mighty western ghat and is situated in the Udupi district of Karnataka. The town is famous for housing the historic 850 years old Kere Basadi – the lake temple. The temple is built amidst a man-made lake as a four-faced symmetrical structure and is dedicated to the Jain Lord Parshwanatha.

Google revealed the design of the Pixel 7 device in a new teaser

A couple of days ago, Google tweeted a sneak peek video of the upcoming Pixel 7 Pro on their official Twitter handle and spilled the beans about its India launch. Along with the launch of Pixel 7 Pro, the company also confirmed the launch information of the non-Pro Pixel 7 device but didn’t release any teaser video of the phone.

Now, a few hours ago, Google posted a new video on its official YouTube channel and guess what the new teaser features in it? Yes, Google Pixel 7! The upcoming smartphone from the house of Google looks stunning in the video, and for now, we can say it’s going to be available in three colour variants, called Obsidian, Snow, and Lemongrass.

The non-Pro Pixel 7 device has almost the same design as its elder sibling except for the size of the smartphone and one less camera on the back. The 7th generation Pixel phones are similar on the inside to their predecessors, with a new Tensor G2 chipset and a few other changes, but nothing noteworthy.

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones will become fully official on the 6th of October, on the day of the Google Event. The pricing of the Pixel 7 in the US and European markets was recently revealed on Amazon. The Pixel 7 device will start at $599 and €649 in Europe, while the price of the Pro device is not revealed yet, but it would likely start at $899 and €899 in Europe.

Apple ditches the production of the iPhone 14 due to lower demand

Since Apple launched the iPhone 14 series at the Far Out event, it has been trending all over the world as it was one of the most awaited launches of the year. However, right after the launch of the iPhone 14 series, people noticed there’s not much to explore in the iPhone 14 (we’re not including the pro series iPhones and the all-new iPhone 14 Plus) except for a few substantial changes from last year’s iPhone 13.

The iPhone 14 is probably one of the best iPhones in the current market, but at first glance, it appears like a renamed replica of the iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 has numerous notable upgrades, including a vibrant display, excellent cameras, safety features like Emergency SOS via satellite and Crash Detection and, of course, a slightly more powered A15 Bionic chipset.

Earlier, Apple planned to make at least 6 million more units by the end of the year and asked its suppliers to increase the production of the iPhone 14 as the company expected strong demand. However, within a 4-weeks of the launch date, due to lower demand, the company decided to reduce the production of the iPhone 14.

The sales of the lower-priced iPhone 14 are not strong enough, while the sales of the over-priced iPhone 14 Pro models are getting more robust. Of course, due to the little to no price difference between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models. Also, the lowered price of the iPhone 13 plays a huge role in the game as it remains on sale for a reduced price.

The company has priced iPhone 14 at ₹79900 and the iPhone 14 Plus at ₹89900, which is very close to the price range of the iPhone 14 Pro models, which are loaded with a brand-new always-on display with Dynamic Island, a 48-megapixel wide camera, and the new A16 Bionic chip. Whatever the reason, Apple will surely make a profit out of it.

Extreme destinations – Travel at your own risk

Being born in a time where everyone runs behind the social media trends, we often end up following the most travelled road, whether in terms of education, fashion or a vacation. Over the last couple of years, countries and places like Maldives, Bali, and Dubai have earned a place in every traveller’s heart and are earning millions through them. However, if you want to go a little off way, there are various places where you should not travel, as they have a history of jeopardy.

North Sentinel Island, India

We’re beginning the list with one of our places, which is situated in the Andaman Islands. North Sentinel Island has a brief history of endangerment, and not many people are aware of its danger or even its existence. The island is home to the Sentinelese, an indigenous people who have been living in isolation for ages and don’t have any clue about the modern world. The island is a protected area of India and is considered one of the most dangerous places to visit in the world.

The Sentinelese people are infamous for their violence and reluctance to communicate with outsiders. Every time someone has tried to enter the secluded island, the tribes have attacked and murdered the visitors. When the Indian Coast Guard helicopters flew overhead to drop off food parcels for the tribes during the tsunami, the tribe attacked them with arrows and stones. As a result, the government has banned its citizens from visiting the island.

Death Valley, United States

A desert valley in the northern Mojave Desert is said to be the world’s hottest place, especially during the summers. Death valley got its forbidden name from a band of settlers who lost here in the winter of 1849-1850. The valley is famous for its heat exposure but has witnessed more deaths due to single-car accidents instead of heat strokes. The hottest, driest, and lowest National Park in the world is home to rattlesnakes, scorpions, and black widow spiders.

Devil’s Pool, Zambia

The Devil’s Pool is Situated atop one of the world’s largest waterfalls, Victoria Falls. The edge of the massive waterfall forms a calm pool of water when the Zambezi River’s levels drop during the drier months of the year. The pool is situated along the Zambia-Zimbabwe border and offers the most thrilling, insane, and incredible experiences. However, one should only risk taking a dip in the pool from mid-August to mid-January; otherwise, you know who’s waiting down there.

New Smyrna Beach, Florida

Have you seen Steven Spielberg’s Jaws? If yes, then you probably have guessed what we’re going to say next. New Smyrna Beach is situated in the state of Florida, which is renowned for its beach resorts, warm and sunny climate. The beach is famous for gorgeous sunrises and white-sand shores but has a fearsome reputation as it is infamous for being a fertile hunting ground for sharks and has recorded over 250 shark attacks.

Snake Island, Brazil

You can not set foot here without acquiring certain permits from the Brazilian government, which has made it illegal for anyone to visit. Ilha da Queimada Grande, or Snake Island, is an island about 25 miles off the coast of Brazil in the Atlantic Ocean and is considered one of the deadliest places in the world. The 43-hectare island is home to the critically endangered, venomous Bothrops insularis (golden lancehead pit viper), whose diet consists mainly of migratory birds.

Google confirmed the launch of Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro in India

Google launched the Pixel 6a in India in July 2022. The phone created a buzz around the country as it was very compact, and everybody just fell for its design, aesthetics and, of course, camera. Now, following the success of the Pixel 6a, the company confirmed the launch of the next generation series of Pixel smartphones in India – Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro through their Twitter handle.

The company also tweeted a sneak peek video of the upcoming Pixel 7-series, and no doubt the smartphone looks stunning at first glance. The Pixel 6-series launched in the US were priced at USD 599 and USD 899, respectively. The upcoming 7-series Pixel phones are also expected to be priced around their predecessor’s price segment.

The company is hosting an event on October 6, 2022, where they are expected to launch Google’s latest Pixel devices, from handsets to wearables. The successor of 6-generation Pixel phones will feature the Tensor G2 chipset, offering new personalised features for photos, videos, speech recognition and security.

On the event of Flipkart’s Big Billion Sale, the e-commerce giant put up a teaser on its site confirming the imminent launch of the Pixel 7 series in India. Notably, the company haven’t launched their premium phones in the country since the launch of the Pixel 3 series. The Pixel 7-series would be Google’s first premium series of smartphones launched in India since 2018.

How Big is GTA?

I was a huge fan of the GTA series (before I joined the notorious rat race), as the game allows you to throw off your frustration without causing any real-life trouble. The very first GTA game I ever played was Vice City, which featured the temperamental gangster and criminal mastermind Thomas “Tommy” Vercetti. The controversial gaming series is one of the most popular franchises for gamers due to the nature of the game.

The Gameplay

The basic storyline follows the rise of the protagonist in the criminal world and how he works his way to the top. However, the storyline depends on the time period the game is set in and changes from game to game. The games are split into three distinct parallel universes (2D, 3D, and HD) and are set in fictional caricatures of well-known United States cities like Liberty City – based on New York City, San Andreas – based on San Francisco, and Vice City – based on Miami.

The Acquisitions

The DMA Design Limited released the first game in the cosmos in 1997 and named it – Grand Theft Auto. The game was a huge success, but right after its release, the company was acquired by Gremlin Interactive. After a couple of acquisitions, the company was renamed Rockstar North and became part of the Rockstar Games in 2001. Every game of the GTA series tasted success, but Grand Theft Auto V broke all the records and became the second-best-selling game of all time.

The Universes

The first fictional universe ever introduced by the developing company DMA was 2D-Universe, which features the original Grand Theft Auto, its expansions and its sequel in a 2-dimensional world with a Top-Down Perspective. The 3D-Universe introduced a third-person view of a 3D world, where we can explore the GTA world in a better way. The 3D-Universe of the GTA consists of Grand Theft Auto III and its sequels.

Along with these games, the 3D-Universe also features two non-GTA games, Manhunt and Bully. The last and the latest universe in the GTA series is HD-Universe, which includes six games, an expansion pack for GTA IV, GTA V, and GTA Online. The Liberty City in the HD-Universe appears more detail oriented and extensive than the previous universes. All the universes are separate entities, yet, some characters and their backstories have been cited across universes.

GTA Controversies

Since the series ‘ first embodiment, GTA and controversies have been anchored in the same package. The action-adventure game is known for its adult nature and violent themes. The first-ever game of the cosmos was banned in Britain, Germany, Brazil and France due to its core. With the arrival of 3D graphics in the GTA-3, the game became more realistic, along with violence, and the controversies hit back to haunt the developers. In GTA-3, players have out-of-the-world options to restore their health, like paying for sexual activities with prostitutes and then killing them to get some of their money back. Not to mention, GameSpy awarded it with the title “Most Offensive Game of the Year”.

The game was banned in several countries due to its portrayal of sexual content, violence against prostitutes and a wide variety of other crimes like killing policemen, military personnel and civilians. Furthermore, when GTA Vice City came into existence, it also came under criticism as it showed a gang war between Haitians and Cubans. The phrase “Kill the Haitian dickheads”, which created the trouble, was altered from the phrase of the game after Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition filed a lawsuit against Rockstar games. When GTA San Andreas was released, it also created a controversy as it featured an interactive sex minigame nicknamed Hot Coffee.

The Grand Theft Auto series’s latest and most loved game has everything you could ask for – from a design, storytelling, and technical perspective. GTA V (online) was released in 2013, but even after a decade, it remains trendy and competes with other newly released identical games. Set in a fictional Los Angeles called Los Santos, the game offers three playable protagonists – Trevor Philips, Michael De Santa and Franklin Clinton, each with a different perspective and distinct background.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

When Rockstar Games released GTA San Andreas on PS2 and Xbox, it was a breathtaking moment for every single gamer. The city was based on Los Angeles and other areas, while the story follows the journey of a former gangster Carl “CJ” Johnson, who returns home and pulls back to his infamous gang following his mother’s murder. The game was one of the most stylish and enjoyable games ever released, thanks to the well-created characters, dialogues, and sound design.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
