Instagram Brings Nicknames, Location Sharing, and More Updates to DMs

Instagram

Instagram is enhancing its direct messages (DMs) with a suite of new features aimed at making conversations more engaging and personalized. Announced on Monday, these updates include the ability to customize chats with nicknames and a Snapchat-inspired location-sharing feature, making it easier to connect with friends or navigate crowded places. These additions follow Instagram’s recent efforts to improve user experience, such as adding filters to sort message requests and removing automatic feed refreshing.

Instagram’s Latest DM Upgrades

In a blog post, Instagram highlighted the introduction of nicknames in chats, a feature designed to add a personal touch to conversations. By tapping on a profile within a chat, users can assign nicknames and control who can modify them, with options ranging from “everyone in this chat” to “only you.” Notably, nicknames are visible exclusively in DMs and have no impact on usernames across the app.

Another notable addition is the location-sharing feature, which draws parallels to Snapchat’s Snap Map. This tool lets users share their live location for up to an hour or pin specific spots on the map, simplifying meetups in crowded spaces. Available in one-on-one or group chats, the feature is off by default and currently accessible in select countries. Instagram emphasizes privacy, ensuring location sharing is limited to DMs.

To further enhance communication, Instagram is rolling out 17 new sticker packs featuring over 300 stickers for DMs. Users can mark their favourite stickers for quick access or reuse those created with cutouts or shared by friends.

These updates underscore Instagram’s commitment to making conversations more expressive and interactive, setting the stage for a richer messaging experience. Whether it’s customizing chats or sharing your location seamlessly, Instagram is equipping users with tools to connect in meaningful ways.
